Mary Worth 1,367

"Quick. Get on the helicopter before the other 4,000 passengers notice!"

Another fun Costa Concordia fact: "Both helicopters were, figuratively and literally, operating in the dark. There was no chance of communication with anyone on board; the only way to assess the situation, in fact, was to lower a man onto the Concordia" (Vanity Fair, May 2012).

Today's Full Strip

Have all of the 4000 other passengers completely disappeared? For the purposes of this strip, no one seems to mind. This story seems to have been written so that Dawn, Wilbur, and the two very buff Keno brothers could end up clinging to a pole on a sinking ship together. And Dawn's "Do they see us?" line is an instant classic. No, Dawn, how could they possibly see a cruise ship listing perilously to one side, with thousands of passengers in the water?

"Do they see us?" A gigantic cruise ship, sinking 100 yards offshore, chaos in the water, carnage on the decks. Do they SEE you?

Of course not. This is the Worthiverse.

"Hey, Guido, you think anything's wrong with that ship?"

"Looks OK to me, Fredo. You wanna head over to Florence and get a bite to eat?"

"Sure! Why don't we try the Tuscan Vegan Food Court? I hear the vegetables are very flavorful."

I'm getting surly over this in so many ways. All must die.

Dawn first!

Oh no! That man's head is bursting out of Dawn's chest!!!

Moy must have read my post on Monday about Wilbur being rescued by a helicopter. That, or she and I think alike... which is scary. Cue the porpoises!

I wish Moy would give us a "MEANWHILE..." panel showing the ship's captain relaxing on the island's beach, sipping a Bellini, while he watches the Unita del Mare sink.

By the way, "Do they see us?" refers to the four of them (plus the incidental blonde in the background), not the ship in general.

If Dawn and the BurlyKenos get rescued, I already know the next plotline: not only do they fight over her, but she has to deal with dating abuse due to their obvious Anger Issues.

Do you see the glare on that one's mug? WOW. And it's not the first time. Hey, buddy, no one likes a Crabbypants.

Crabby indeed!
Finally!
What kind of cruise is this?!

Is it any wonder I'm so surly over this...

Is that Dawn's arm or Red's arm thrust in the air? The longer I look at this panel, the more confusing it gets.

oh Dawn, you're such a "strong" swimmer... maybe you should swim out to the helicopter so they will be SURE to see you (tee hee)! Do it for Wilbur! Do it for the Keno twins!

I was so fixated on that burly arm, and who it belonged to, that I almost entirely missed the "Mama" waif in the background. She is no longer being pushed and trampled, but is now uttlerly abandoned. Sniff. It really tugs at your heartstrings. Or not.

"A Helicopter. FINALLY!" Wait for the reaction when they realize it's a news helicopter and not one spefically sent to save the four of them.

Please recall that the other killed each other, like a scene from 300, over by the lifeboats. Nice to see the Keno brothers are looking after the helpless, alone little girl floundering by the railing.

is it me, or is Wilbur blushing?

So, we're denied scenes of passengers killing each other at the lifeboats! Fie on you, Karen Moy!

Throughout the horror, Wilbur has managed to not loosen his tie even one bit. That says a lot about Wilbur, but I don't know what that is.

For just a second, BE the handsome rescue guy on the right in the second panel. Now try to raise your right arm and have your palm facing your head, with the thumb facing forward...

Now that your head is spinning, and your arm in excruciating pain - you will see that basic human anatomy PREVENTS this.

Say it ain't so, Joe (Giella)!...

James Bond, circa the Sean Connery and Roger Moore era, never loosened their ties. Why should Wilbur? I am sure he is about to save them all.

Wasn't there once a plot where Mary, thinking of Dr. Jeff in Vietnam/Peace Village, suddenly got a feeling he needed her? And then she flew to his side and saved his life?

Couldn't Mary get another feeling? And she is in the helicopter? Perhaps she could parachute down like the Queen did into the Olympics.

Got to go now, nursie is here with my meds.

Wilbur loosened his tie on Wednesday while falling off the deck, then tightened it back onboard.

Red Shirt Guy has again used his elfin magic to teleport from Dawn's Right shoulder in panel one to in front of her in panel two, pushing Wilbur and Green Shirt Twin to the right.

Continuity is brutal.

Who dared Wilbur to stick his tongue on the pole? That's as bad as shooting your eye out.

iI interpreted the facial expressions as fear and panic. These two are looking less and less like knights on a white horse.

Helicopter . . . I was hoping for unicorns and Flipper to save Wilbur.
