Mary Worth 1,463

Whereas you go to the pier to unwind from whatfore? Studying? The stress of volunteer eating at the cafeteria? Shopping for purple pantsuits? Chatting online with friends? I can't remember any element of Dawn's routine that would require unwinding at a pier. But it's okay because I can only remember Dawn unwinding at the pier once (to unwind from her near-death experience aboard an Italian cruise liner. Okay.) Maybe by nearly every day she means 'one time.'

All of this just shows up how very little we really know about how even our favorite Santa Royalians spend most of their days (not to mention, heaven help us, their nights).

What does Wilbur do when not commiserating with his annoying daughter or spending the fifteen-to-twenty minutes it must take to crank out that column? Even Mary is really something of a mystery; when she's all on her own, does she help the sofa cushions out with their private problems, or maybe pretend-meddle by telling the salt shaker that she doesn't see what it sees in pepper?

All of which is really to say: can't we please, please focus on someone but Dawn for a while?

Oh brother. Dawn's monologue in the second panel sounds like something churned out of Google Translate.

"I can't be restricted like that?" What in the heck does that mean?

"I don't have the capacity for grief and compassion"?
"I can't get wrapped up in something silly like caring about a dead relative"?
"Give me land, lots of land under starry skies above; don't fence me in"?

(I love the fact that, if you read only the italicized words in today's instalment, you get Dawn's description of Jim: AVOIDS THE PIER--EVERY DAY--RESTRICTED!)

This has gone wildly insane. Like, stayed with meager insanity for a while, talked to moderate insanity over lunch, then put on something slinky and left town with drooling insanity.

all kinda pointless, but not so much fun.

Wanders, my thoughts exactly. Unwind from WHAT, Dawn? Mary's pie is making Dawn hallucinate. (That might explain some of the peculiar ingredients Mary tosses into her concoctions.)

On Thanksgiving Eve, it's nice to see that Dawn is in full Me Mode. "Jim, it's been four months since your sister died - get over it!"

So that's the deal-breaker? He's not a fan of THE PIER? Dawdling around by the water and idly watching the sailboats is far more important to Dawn than possibly helping a suffering friend?

Well, of course it is. This pseudo-teenager is shallower than all the Real Housewives franchisees combined. Note the petulant pout when she mentions being "restricted".

Or maybe that's a symptom of impending gastric distress. Since the chocolate-livercream pie has dissolved most of her fork, heaven knows what it's doing to her alimentary canal.

I love that look on Mary's face in the second panel. Is she getting tired of hearing about Dawn's tough life (like the rest of us), or is it that thing that appeared on Dawn's lip?

Well stated Wanders.

Maybe Jim likes flying kites.

Dawn needs to unwind after every visit with Mary - wouldn't you?

I just want to slap Karen Moy in the face.

What is a "bight" of pie? Maybe the pie is a blight on the cuisine of Charterstone? Or maybe "bight" is meant to show that Dawn, a student who never seems to be in class, can't spell?

"Jim also finished college, and he has a career. I can't be RESTRICTED like that!"

OMG, the man avoids the PIER, which plays such a central roll in Dawn's life. And Jim's the one with the problem? Run Jim. Run and don't look back.

I've heard that differences in religion, politics, life goals, finances, etc. play a roll in choosing whom to consider as a life partner, but love of the PIER is a first. Kudos to Moy for demonstrating once again that we should never underestimate her inaptitude as she continues to top herself.

Dawn wears purple to eat pie but imagines herself in pink at the pier. Purple is to pie as pink is to pier.

Jim is to disabled as Moy is to incompetent.
