Mary Worth 1,481

Mary's going to need a lot more than friendship to fight off that book case that's rapidly sneaking up from behind!

Mary needs an ergonomics advisor pronto.

The knot on her scarf/tie... has gone vertical!

No, I have no idea what that means.

But I don't care, for a new story will greet us on the 17th, per the predictions of Heydavesteramus!

Has Moy finally gone 'round the bend? Nothing for a week other than empty and useless platitudes?

heydave@8.37a - you seem pretty certain we'll have a new story on Dec 17th? I've given up hope that anything will ever come from Moy's pen other than emptiness...

Question to all: Any guess as to what the question was to Ask Wendy that Mary is blathering on about with vague platitudes and quotes?

@Anonymous 9:40AM
Yes. The question was: I haven't been able to sleep in 2 days. Is there anything you could suggest to help???

@ Heydave: Yep! The 17th. I'm rootin' for ya.

Anonymous@9:40am. The question was probably related to Dawn and (who was it, Jim? I've already forgotten, as his character only exists to reflect off Dawn)'s experience. Mary's week of platitudes takes the place of the Chorus commenting during an ancient Greek play. Ah yes, the great triumverate of Sophocles, Aristophanes, and Moy.

@Dave in Parma (yesterday). I'm in the tutoring departments at all three places. Subjects: Mathematics (the harder, the more fun), Physics, Chemistry, Music/Arts Appreciation.

And lastly, I suggested Friday, 12/21 mainly because it's my first day/evening off since the semester began (I'm ready to Party), and it was far enough ahead of Xmas to hopefully not interfere with other plans. For the sake of conviviality, I can wait. Make a counter-proposal.

A Bookcase Named Despair. Possible sequel to "A Streetcar Named Desire"?

Despair is Mary's biggest weapon. I come here to fight that sorrow.

I saw an interesting slant yesterday on the whole Mayan end of World Prediction story that has been in the news. The gist is that it is being mistranslated, that it was simply meant to indicate that the calendar rolls over to a new cycle. The Mayan calendar cycles are 394 years, modeled after the Mary Worth story-line duration. It is comforting to know that the world will not be ending and the story line will reset soon, be it as predicted by HeyDavestradamus, or on the 21st as the Mayans predicted. I would think HeyDave's scenario is more likely, but then again I didn't think the platitudes could last as long as they already have lasted.

If the plot does not reset soon, I'd like to opt for door number two, end of the world.

@Mike: wife has taught bio-chem, anatomy, but usually nutrition. Hoping to find out soon if doggy surgery goes down today, or they just consult and schedule it.

I will admit to being eager to see my prediction come to pass, but this painful parade o' platitudes brings me a little closer to death every hour. Srsly? The mind reels...

Mary must have computers in every room; yesterday she was sitting next to a window and a vase of flowers.

Anyway I think she's given up on the Ask Wendy column and she's simply writing on her Facebook page (What's on Your Mind?) or updating her status with favorite quotations.

You can't handle the platitudes!

I wonder if Dawn knows that "throwy arm" is an anagram of "mary worth".

Dave in Parma said...

So is 'Warry Moth' @Thorpnotized.

When I initially glanced at today's strip, I thought Mary had said

"Friendship is one of the strongest weapons we have against desire"

I was disappointed.

Despair? Sorrow? I say we ship Mary to Whoville. Maybe Cindy Lou Who can talk some sense into her ("Why, Mary Worth? Why?")

(Note to Mike in Cleveland and Dave in Parma, I work at that Jesuit university on the east side.)

Great comments today: Next Up! Mary v. the attacking furniture.

When meg was a child, she had a 'friend' who was very silly and slightly naughty. This friend's idea of something funny to do during a sleepover was to call up people (usually teachers) and slowly intone things such as:
"A rolling stone gathers no moss."
"A penny saved is a penny earned."
"You can't always get what you want."
Oops, scratch that last one.
Of course, little meg, being a serious sort, would have never taken a turn on the phone. (She was too busy looking up proverbs in the Encyclopedia.)

Mary/Karen sure has a shallow and gloomy view of the world. Stalking equals friendship. Platitudes equal therapy. And nothing equals writing.

Has "Ask Wendy" been renamed "Confucius Says"?

I swear, if Moy uses the Connecticut school shooting in a storyline, I will personally find out where she lives and slap her silly

Hey, is there a Cleveland meet-up being planned? I'm in Chardon.
