Mary Worth 2124

Okay, so now I understand that yesterday's dog in a thought bubble, was probably Toby thinking about work. So, my question today is what has that fox killed? Another question I have is, why is Ian so desperate to sell Hilton Berkes, New University Director, on moving into Charterstone? And I guess my third question is, How does New University Director Berkes expect to lead if he continues to refer to University as "YOUR University?"

Other than that, I'm good.

I apologize for the lateness of my posts this week. I'm on a long vacation. But sometimes, you still have to post.

Today's full strip

Toby has been rendered speechless by this drivel.

I'd think that Ian's obsession with getting Hilton Berkes to move to Charterstone ought to drive him away as fast as anything. Ian would be constantly harassing him, or leaving little gifts at his door.

Twas the night of the director,
But inside Toby's head;
Was not kissing up,
But visions of gray animals instead.

I don't know that a non-stop, hard sell for Charterstone just so Ian can get his $200 referral fee counts as "entertaining" his guest.

I'll add another question to the ones posed by Wanders: Shouldn't Hilton Berkes have paused BEFORE agreeing to take on the director's post of Crummy Podunk University of Santa Royale? Hilton must be a man with a past.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on. I mean it.

Toby is thinking of: Fifty Shades of Little Gray Animals (maybe I should make them mauve)

Ian is thinking of: Fifty Ways to Butter Up the New Boss (Mebbe he'd loch tae hear me play th' bags)

The Director is thinking of: Fifty Ways to Get Out of the Cameron Apartment and away from the Inedible Food (don't eat the Stilton, Hilton)

Mary is thinking of: Fifty Excuses to Ring the Cameron Doorbell (even though she knows they're entertaining)

Oh, I'm not a bit surprised at Hilton referring to "YOUR" University. You should see how the new President of my alma mater and former workplace is running it right into the ground! Snarl. I'm happy to be newly retired.

I'm sorry but whatever is going on in Toby's head is just wrong.

Desperately missing Mary. This story is so bad and so weird that only she can rescue it.

I LOVE this plot. I LOVE Toby Cameron! (I'm not sure why.) Anyway, I would also love to see Mary ring the bell and pop in with lots of unsolicited advice. She could advise Hilton how to run the university, she could advise Ian on how to get ahead in his career, and she could advise Toby on her sculpting. Everyone will be much happier after she has told them how they are messing up and how to make things better. Then it's be time for dessert ... pinkcake with a pink sugar statuette of Mary on top. YUM!

I think Mary and Hilton would make a wonderful couple. That would make Dr. Jeff jealous. Fight at The Bum Boat!

I think that fox is in a litter box.

Well, Hilton, which one is it? Is the house too big or are you undecided? How did you like those brown chicken lumps? By the way, are you Glenn Ford or John Carradine?

I agree, Toots, that Joe is still trying to figure out what Hilton actually looks like. By the way, can I use Fox in a Litter Box for the name of my new band?

Yahoonski,
By all means!

Friday:
Reading Karen Moy's writing is like watching a bull move around in a china shop. "Hmm? I'm sorry! I'm wondering if the chicken I cooked is overdone!" THE CHICKEN I COOKED! We all know where this train wreck is heading, especially since Toby carelessly tossed all the containers from her STORE-BOUGHT items (GASP!) into her kitchen garbage. I can't wait for Mr. Embassy Suites to get even more high and mighty when he helps clear the table and makes this fascinating discovery. I think it's safe to conclude that Ian's job is anything but secure. What with that scheming wife of his and all!

Of all the supercilious put downs--"I see enough of you at work"--not that Ian doesn't deserve it for his over anxious bootlicking. Still, Director Berkes is revealed as a bad guest and (here the earthy old lady censors herself for family friendly consumption) a total jerk!

Dawn Weston's Evil Twin said...

Everyone is being a jerk today, which is what makes today's strip so awesome! Toby admits that she hasn't been paying attention to their blather and also gives herself undue credit about the chicken she didn't cook herself. (She knows that Food Team's rotisserie chicken is delectable.) Hilton brings Toby down a notch by saying that the chicken is only "fine" and then he disses Ian in a hilarious manner. Ian is being a jerk by having caused this whole (awesomely!) awkward dinner party. Finally, Toby has hostile thoughts about their dinner guest but is polite enough to keep them to herself. I really hope Mary pops over for dessert. That would be truly delicious!

Be afraid, be very afraid...Mary WILL pop in. Ideally, she will say, thanks for picking up the rotisserie chicken for me at Food Team's two for one sale. But no matter, Hilton will fall hard for the enchantingly lovely old bag, just like every other man of a suitable age who appears in the strip. Then he will be anxious to move to Charterstone!

fauxprof- kudos for 'over anxious bootlicking'! Today's strip is even more delicious than the chicken.

Fauxprof your comments are always spot on and make me laugh. I have to admit, this is the first time I've felt unsure of where a MW plot line was headed.

I'll have you know that Hilton Berkes, New Director, dines using only the finest of toothbrushes!

Shouldn't Hilton have paused BEFORE he agreed to take the post of university director, not WHEN he agreed? In any case, "smaller than my previous academic situation" is so awkward....pure KM. Thank goodness for Uncle Joe's thought bubbles and Toby's facial expressions to entertain us.

Saturday
Hilton can't be honest when he says he's leaving with a good impression of Charterstone. He dissed the Camerons' apartment and the university he agreed to direct. He shared questionable (I'm being charitable) food with an officious toady wearing an AstroTurf sport coat and a vacuous woman who barely spoke. Sounds like a disaster to me.

I expect Hilton will fall into the pool tomorrow and be rescued by Mary. Bigger disaster!

I don't get why Toby didn't say anything at dinner about her sculpting or her upcoming gallery showing. That would have been interesting for Hilton, I'm sure. And I feel really cheated that there was no dessert and no after-dinner coffee ... and no MARY! Where is she? She needs to pop in and give Toby some moral support and us readers some comic relief!
