Well, today is the day that the entire Worthiverse has been waiting for. It was recently leaked that there would be a Mary Worth crossover with another comic strip, and today we learn it is the Phantom!
Of course, I don't read the Phantom, so I really could not care less.

Oh great. Mary has only just left the airport and ALREADY managed a good deed by helping that woman avoid being hit by the cab. One more gust of hot air to inflate her unjustifiably bloated ego...
The Phantom?? There's a strip by that name? Ho-hum, I'm with Wanders on this. We're left with these boring questions:
1. Which is louder, "SCREEEECHH" or "SCREEEECH!"?
2. Why are those ponytails at different angles and lengths?
3. Is blonde woman just a little girl from Little Rock?

Oh great. The much-anticipated crossover melds two of the most boring, slow-moving strips imaginable. Unless maybe that's not Heloise, but Supergirl, and the driver did indeed hit her. Because something has severely compacted the front seat of that cab.
The only reason I'm aware that The Phantom exists is from reading the Comics Curmudgeon blog. What a total letdown. Even judge Parker would have been preferable.
Rats....I had been hoping Mary ended up in the hospital and it would be revealed - ever so slowly - that she let her Medicare Part X or Y or Z or whatever lapse and that she would have to pay New York prices for her medical co-pays and prescriptions. Well, a guy can dream, can't he????
I am fascinated by this...Will both strips continue to meld their plots? I notice in the Phantom strip that Mary is a shadowy ominous figure in the back seat, and Blondie stands with her hands on hps in the Phantom but is waving at the cab in Mary Worth.... Even more significant, I see the cab driver has done a spectacular job of deflecting any notice of the fact he was texting while driving by blaming the woman in front of the cab for not noticing that he has a fare already... Lame.
Groan! I agree, Wanders. What a drag! I was really hoping for a crossover with Apartment 3-G. That would've been wacky and wonderful. ... Wait! Maybe there will be a new crossover every day this week! Hope springs eternal ...
Behind the scenes fact: The original crossover was to be Mary Worth and Mrs Butterworth, but the plot contained too many sticky issues and interest pancaked.
Like Wanders and fellow commenters, I don't read the Phantom, and yet I'm excited about the MW/Phantom crossover. Why? Hubby reads the Phantom. He's tried to get me to appreciate the Phantom, Prince Valiant, Spiderman, and several obscure strips that involve mathematics, and my response is usually "meh." My fascination with MW,Judge Parker, and Rex Morgan eludes him, and A3G at this point gives him a headache. Common ground after all these years -- it's a beautiful thing!
I've never heard of the Phantom, so it's not very exciting for me. Given that anything is possible when Olive is nearby, I was kind of hoping Lisa from Funky Winkerbean would show up. Of course, Moy would probably make that boring too.
Don't cab drivers in NY accept more than one fare at a time, especially if they're going the same general direction? Has Mary really demanded the whole cab to herself? I haven't taken a cab in ages, but I rarely was the only passenger when I did. I don't think I'd get into one that almost ran me over though.
I'm with most here who have never followed the Phantom. And I don't care to start now. But what I hope for, is that whoever draws the Phantom will trump Uncle Joe, and give us a realistically drawn Mary. One that finally depicts her at her true age - 120 years - give or take.
This isn't the wonderful bonding experience I hoped for. Hubby is complaining about lack of parallel dialogue in the two strips. But here's his expository notes: The Phantom has twin children - boy and girl - and the daughter is looking at schools in New York. The son is currently at a monastery in the Himalayas.
Mary, Olive, and Daughter are going to become some type of superpower trifecta. Central Park flower faries will somehow be involved.

I just checked both strips online, and in the Phantom version, Miss Ponytail introduces herself as a "jungle girl".
Mary: Oh, I know who you are, then. You're Bindi! You don't sound as Australian in person. You're my favorite to win. Now, tell me all about Derek! What's he really like?"

The Phantom is actually the very first costumed superhero, appearing in comic strips about 3 years before Superman appeared in comic books. It's still quite popular internationally.
It's actually FAR better than Mary Worth by any artistic standard. I read Mary Worth to snark at it. I read the Phantom because it's good.
The role of the Phantom is passed down from father to son, since the 1500s. The natives of Bangalla believe that it's all the same person, who never dies. Heloise is the daughter of the Phantom, and theoretically can't take over for dad, since she's a daughter, not a son. But I've been wondering if they'll change that.
