Mary Worth 2181

I knew this was going to be a cross-over story, but I didn't know there would be actual cross-dressing!

Today's full strip

Thanks for posting The Phantom, Wanders. Apart from the clothing color, those artists give an edgier look to Mary. Her coat reminds me of the one worn by Christoph Waltz in "Inglourious Basterds" (and by Colonel Klink in "Hogan's Heroes"). Of course, Mary still sports her same earrings. Is the pendant on Heloise a demonic symbol?

Shouldn't the cabbie have some say about who gets in his cab? Where'd he go anyway?

I must say I'm surprised so many of my fellow Mary followers profess ignorance of the Phantom, a strip that has been going strong for many years. Currently Comics Kingdom is offering FOUR different varieties. In addition to the well-drawn but too often glacially-paced daily, there is a separate storyline and different artist for the Sunday version. CK also offers two vintage Phantoms: the Lee Falk and Ray Moore dailies from 1948 and the Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy Sunday strips from 1950, which I think are the best of the bunch. In any case, the only real hope I hold for this crossover is that Mary will somehow find an opportunity to try on the Phantom's outfit, especially those darling striped skivvies. Or maybe we'll get a variation on
the old jungle saying "Phantom rough on roughnecks," namely "Phantom rough on meddlers."

Wow - Phantom Mary looks like Ginger Rogers in her later years.

You guys, LOVE the tag --- "Phantom Mary"!!!

Heloise??? If she's "from the jungle", I doubt she provides household hints like how to remedy a slow-running kitchen drain...

Two P's form Heloise's mysterious pendant. I expect at least one of them to disappear once she's spent a certain amount of (purgatorial) time with Mary.

I wouldn't go around telling people in New York that you're a 'Jungle Girl', not unless you're looking for a very specific type of 'job'.

For the greatest irony, the 'I'm not a robot challenge' asked me identify taxis.

So to summarize the differences between The Phantom and Mary Worth:

1) Mary tells people what to do by sticking her nose in their business. The predominant color in the strip is salmon. The Phanton tells people what to do by sticking a gun to their head. The predominant color of the strip is purple.

2) The Phantom has a diverse cast including black tribesman. The only thing black in MW is the shadows that the bald, white muggers hide in.

When Heloise identified herself as a "jungle girl", I imagined Mary misidentifying her as Bindi Irwin, and asking questions about "Dancing With The Stars".

"Phantom Mary?" Rather ironic as the "Bloody Mary" ghost urban legend's full title is "Bloody Mary Worth"

What a boring crossover! Bring on little Olive Taylor. At least SHE has some imagination. ... snark, snark, snark.

Will the "Island Girl" from the Elton John song be the next to hail the cab?

I wonder what sort of huthold tips Heloise from the Jungle will have? How to keep the bamboo walls, doors, and furniture polished? The ideal freshness level of the palm fronds for the thatched roof? I can't wait!

KitKat: Heloise's pendant is the Phantom's "good mark", a symbol to those who recognise it to show that she is a friend and should be helped or protected if required (and those who harm her will suffer the Phantom's wrath), or can be looked to for help.

Basically it's the opposite of the more well-known skull mark, which is a sign that the bearer has been punched by the Phantom and is therefore probably a bad guy (or was an innocent soldier or law-enforcement officer who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way).

Looks more like Christopher Walken
