Last January, I took my son to Manhattan on a Father-Son senior trip, and we had a blast. We went to see a Broadway show, and went ice skating (for free at Bryant Park). We saw Stomp downtown. We had lots of adventures, but they don't really make a good story!
The one thing we did, that I really hope Mary and Olive will do is we went to a jazz club. We went to a little hole in the wall place called Somethin' Jazz Club. It was located off the beaten path on East 52nd Street, and as we climbed the dimly lit, narrow stairs to the third floor, my son turned to me with a glint in his eye and said, "This looks authentic." The Matt Savage Trio was playing and they were amazing. There were 12 people in the club, six of whom were students of the drummer. Matt Savage played the piano and really looked like he was 18 tops. We ordered appetizers, which they ran downstairs to a restaurant to bring up to us. It was a great night. Sadly, but not surprisingly, the Somethin' Jazz Club has closed, so Mary and Olive will miss it (children were welcome), but you can enjoy the Matt Savage Trio on Spotify.

"We had lots of adventures, but they don't really make a good story!"
That never stopped Moy and Giella!
If Mary and Olive hit all the tourist attractions the city has to offer, this "story" may go on forever and we shall grow old together.
I hope tomorrow we get to see Olive and Mary wait in line to ride the elevator up the Empire State Building. Watching people ice skate is fun, but watching other people wait in line is even more fun.
Too bad those acrobats didn't follow Mary and Olive to the ice rink... The New York state primary is April 19. It seems Mary will soon be eligible to establish residency and vote--which is STILL not a plotline..
I hope Mary has remembered to take her Fosamax for her osteoporosis. One slip ice skating and the old hip will be broken and there'll be no more bopping around the city for her and Olive. It'll be judge Judy and Springer until March!
Wanders, the Somethin' Jazz Club sounds authentic all right, but, unfortunately, not in the category of Pork Chops and Acrobats.
Today is the first day Olive and Mary are wearing gloves, so I guess winter has finally come to New York. Time crawls on...
Tomorrow: Prepare to be wowed by Mary's triple axel, everyone!
Jeez, I hope no one goes all Tonya Harding on our dear Mary!
There's still the Cloisters and MOMA for art, cathedrals (both St. Patrick's and St. John the Divine), Chinatown, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island...we could be here until Summer.
didn't Mary wow us with her ice skating technique in a long ago (and long forgotten) story line about a figure skater with an obnoxious father/coach ?
I work at Rock Center and can see the rink from my window.Tomorrow I will have to look out and see if I can see Mary and Olive. Here are the prices to skate there. I hope Olive is under age 11!

Prices...
Adults $25
Children under 11 & Seniors $15
Skate Rental $12
Sooo, the dynamic (not so) duo is shelling out a good bit to skate for 15 minutes!
YAY! Tomorrow ... pratfalls await!!!!
I want to see Mary and Olive snowboard behind a jeep.
Is Mary going to bust out the figure skating costume she's hiding underneath that coat?
Tuesday
Maybe Mary's scarf (tucked under her collar in p. 1 and then mysteriously draped over her shoulder in p. 2) will become entangled in some machinery and there will be a ghastly accident a la Isadora Duncan.
OR...
Mary crashes into a mature, bearded gentleman who turns out to be none other than (ta da!) Former Broadway Legend Ken Kensington.
Here's hoping Mary doesn't fall and break something. Tee Hee Evy is barely the motherly type, let alone nursing a bedridden houseguest. My guess is they'd medivac her back to Santa Royale and Dr. Jeff.
@fauxprof at 3:11 p.m., that would present a gender-bending version of "The (Wo)Man Who Came to Dinner," with Mary in the Sheridan Whiteside role.
@KitKat--Mary Woolley instead of Monty Wooley?
Isadora Duncan, Sheridan Whiteside? My God, you're all as old as I am.
I can not wait to see that boastful biddy wipe out on the ice. If she actually were an old person with wrinkles and health problems, she'd probable fall and break her hip. Hip Hip Hooray!
@Chin Napkin Groupie, let's make that (ahem!) "mature and cultured."
And on to Wednesday's strip...
Is Mary slumming by saying, "I still got it"?" If Ken Kensington is there, he could say, "By Jove, I think she's got it!" (Another mature and cultured reference...)
Mary is such a showoff. I hope she falls on her face or, better, her tuchus.
It appears Karen Moy is attempting to placate reader rumblings about the absence of plot by having Olive ponder anxiously whether or not she would be able to help Mary if she needed it. Today, of course, Mary proves that she still has "it", relieving Olive. This flirting with a plotline does not meet my definition of a story, however. Now John Dill, skating up to Mary with a valentine cake in hand and proposing marriage, THAT might instigate the beginning of a story.
"I still got it!"
I think she means Medicare coverage.
Just like Seinfeld, it's about nothing....without the humor, insight or intelligence.
