Mary Worth 2597

Well, we're back to our old plot extolling the various activities available on a cruise. But at least we get horses. Let's give those horses some cigarettes. I'm not sure why that strikes me as so funny. I just want to see the horses smoking.

But here's hoping Entertainer Esme locks Katie in the stable.

And panel 1 brings back our old favorite: "Enjoy"

Enjoy: 16
Good:14
Love: 11
Nice: 5

Abandoning snark for a moment, panel two proves that June can really draw, doesn't it? Between the horses and Derek's impressive torso, I have got to throw roses here.

Meanwhile, Mary enthuses about sampling different types of pineapple. Couldn't she do that at Whole Foods?

The only thing that would be funnier than the horses smoking would be Entertainer Esme on a horse, a la Lady Godiva, cigarette in hand.

So the entire bathroom crisis was nothing more than filler. We got hosed, folks.

BTW, is bareback riding for greenhorns a thing? How did they get on their horses with no saddle with stirrups? Did they climb a fence next to where the horses were tied up? Were they lowered down on ropes?

I'm with you, fauxprof. Those are some nice horsies.

The thought of the horses smoking cigarettes cracks me up.

Derek's horse, with its come-hither look and windblown mane, reminds me of Evil Entertainer Esme. Maybe tomorrow 3E will appear on a horse, not only riding bareback but standing on the horse while she offers a cigarette to Derek.

I admit I had no idea that pineapples grow in Jamaica. Jamaica Travel and Culture.com tells me that four varieties of pineapple are grown there, the two most common being the sugarloaf and cowboy. "Cowboy pineapples generally have a more rounded shape with a deeper patterned skin and a tough fibrous core which cannot be eaten." I hope Mary and Toby sample a cowboy and attempt to eat the tough fibrous core.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled "Mecca".

Sample pineapple!
Beautiful!
Smoke.

@KitKat: I started to laugh out loud thinking of Mary sinking her teeth into a Cowboy pineapple and Mary's false teeth come out.

Maybe 3E will lock Katie in a barn this time...

Wanders, something tells me you'd get a kick out of Latawnya, The Naughty Horse, Learns To Say "No" To Drugs

@Alice: I love that book, the pictures are great!!!

I wonder what you use as a palate cleanser between sampling the different varieties of pineapple.

No, seriously....I am wondering that right now.

And I want a smoke.

I thought we were cruising in Tahiti . . .

What? No one else is thinking, "Hubba, hubba! There goes a youthful Vladimir Putin!"

@ Shmoopie: well, yeah, sorta.

Reminds me of Dave.

Agreed! That panel the other day of Esme scowling from the balcony with a cloud of cigarette smoke was really great too.

And who wears a dress to go horseback riding? Sheesh.

Isn't riding a saddle-less horse, while wearing a very short dress, kind of gross? And the chafing...

I definitely did get a kick out of that. Who knew there was such a thing!

I wasn't going to say anything because my dad was definitely not a vet and I would never promote this as sound advice, but my dad had this idea that tobacco was a good wormer for a horse. Anyway, he would give my pony and later on, my horses, one of his Lucky Strikes, twice a year - unlit (hopefully that would be obvious) and they absolutely loved them. My horses chomped those cigarettes right down and looked for more!

Oh my goodness, there are finally horses and I've been battling a scratched cornea - trying not to read, though I'm on the mend. I own a nicely bred show horse and have ridden horses while on vacation and ne'er the twain shall meet. And no, you can't ride bareback or without a guide.
June should put horses in wherever she can - so lovely!
@ Anonymous, I have never heard of horses eating cigarettes, much less tobacco as a wormer. Fascinating! I doubt if science would back that up, but now I'm dying to ask my equine vet! Do you still ride? Perhaps fancy steeds on the beach while cruising?

Sandi Ego said...

OK, I couldn't wait, I looked up the tobacco wormer already. Very old remedy for horses and cattle before oral paste wormers were created. Not recommended now, of course, but it was considered natural and cheap and many horses enjoyed the treat. I learned something new, thanks!

Good grief, I go away for awhile and find Mary and Toby have been on a cruise for two months and have only gotten from Port Canaveral to Labadee? Did they row?

June can certainly draw horses well. So why can't she draw eyeballs in profile? I miss Uncle Joe...

@Sandi Ego - no, I'm afraid my horseback riding days are over - I lost my last horse, an Arab gelding, in 2000 to a heart attack (he was 30) and am too old now to start over again. My dad is long gone too but I wish he was around so that I could ask him if he knew about the nicotine in tobacco acting as an insecticide. Thanks for sharing that, @Garnet. I never knew the reason behind Dad's cigarette treats! And, finally @Mathew Walls - that's too funny! Thanks for the laugh this morning!

@SandiEgo: Lets have horses in every storyline. What fun! Mary meddling with the ponies, Olive strolling through NYC with a chatty mare...
