Mary Worth 2621

As the star of the shipboard entertainment, Esme is probably aware of the extensive network of security cameras throughout the vessel. She knows their blind spots. She's hidden the deaths of dozens of wives. I'm starting to worry about Katie.

Katie uses a four-symbol comics cuss with one exclamation point. Esme counters with a three-symbol swear but ups the ante with two exclamation points and a physical lunge. Boy, this is the confrontation we wanted between Dawn and Iris to the max. Any bets on who goes over the side in the looming storm?

Sheesh, at least wait for her to answer the question.

@fauxprof: Mary, I hope.

Gosh, day before yesterday I was just kidding about the Briny Deep. Shiver me timbers!

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled "And the Shift Key Gets A Workout".

Stay away from Derek, you #$%#!
What did you call me?!
You #$%!!

I notice that now it's also raining. Besides putting Esme's Eternal Cigarette out, it provides some interesting Symbolism. Not that KM would be employing any of That.

Shouldn't Esme's response have been "What did you call me?! #$% you!!"?

Multiple panel of the year candidates. Either would also make a great t-shirt.

My "plot" projection: Esme charges, Katie shifts cat-like to the right, Esme falls over the railing and tumbles overboard, Derek jumps in to save her, Derek and Esme get pulled to safety by a life preserver thrown by Katie, pulled in by a burly crewman (or Mary).

And when Derek retruns to the deck, he asks, "Does anyone have an extra smoke? I need to calm my nerves."

I don't care if it's Katie or Esme who ends up going over the side. I just can't wait to see Mary, in her nightgown, jumping in to save whoever it turns out to be.

Maybe Mary will be able to resurrect her historic plank dive that she used to save olive....if she happens to be nearby in her nightie.

oops - sorry anon at 9:09. I totally missed that you beat me to the Mary in her nightgown scenario. I've got to start reading more carefully.

Given the maturity level of these characters, I half-expected Esme to say something to Katie like, "I know YOU are, but what am I?", accompanied by her usual smirk. Wouldn't mind seeing Esme bobbing in that water below the rail, surrounded by her discarded cigarettes,,,,

Good comments as always, everybody, including Blog Boy.

I guess those diagonal lines are supposed to represent rain.

Brigman can draw some things really well (horses), some things so-so (she can be a little erratic on faces), and some things really bad. One of the really bad things is water, be it rain, tears, waves breaking on the beach, or that hideous-looking fountain where Iris dumped Zak.

At first I thought Esme's bent on pushing Katie over the rail, but her hands are aiming for Katie's throat. Will Esme strangle Katie, or will Katie duck as Esme falls over the rail? I never watched even a nanosecond of Dynasty,, but wasn't there a big fight between Krystal and Alexis? That was probably much more exciting than Esme vs. Katie.

I remember the night-gowned Mary diving into the pool to save Olive, but I doubt Mary has developed such a deep psychic connection with Katie. Maybe Katie will fall onto Mary and Toby's balcony and Mary will catch her. Or Katie will land on an unfortunate steward....

I doubt Mary would risk a plunge into the sea from such a height. I envision her walking out on deck in her nightgown then dropping a necklace overboard.
Alas, good always triumphs evil so Katie's heart will go on. If Esme goes overboard she will get rescued, but nobody can unfold the towel animals in time to dry her off before she catches a chill and dies.

@Sandi Ego--Everything about your Comment today is Stellar. It's even bested your Considerably Fantastic avatar.

So I've got a question about the syntax of grawlixes (aka profanitype or comic cursing). Is the exclamation point a substitute character or is it the termination of the sentence? Also, is each letter in the swear word replaced with a character?

Assuming the ! is a terminator,

Katie calls Esme a #$%# (with emphasis). A four letter word.

Esme replies with a very similar, but different #$% (with double emphasis). A three letter word.

There's only one or two 3 letter swear words I can think of but neither really fit the context of a retort like this.

Perhaps Esme has a speech impediment? But we've not seen this her past appearances. Given the near perfect story consistency in the Worthiverse it seems unlikely.

This story gets stranger and stranger...

UPDATE

For the linguists out there, here's some grawlix syntax:

@tim shanahan: grawlix! What an awesome word. I've never even encountered it in a crossword puzzle and I'm a puzzle fanatic.

Tim Shanahan - you must be way too young and are obviously way too smart to be reading Mary Worth. Where are your parents or your nanny and why aren't they monitoring you! No one here; believe me - NO ONE here has ever heard of grawlix syntax. Run away; quickly; before you get sucked in!
