Mary Worth 2655

Maybe it's just because I'm a guy, but is anyone else starting to get the impression that Dawn is hitting on Ned, and not the other way around? Or is Dawn saying things that accelerate the relationship without actually intending to establish a relationship? After Sunday's strip, and today's, I'm not so sure what's going on anymore. Actually... I never have been.

It's not because you're a guy, Wanders. Dawn is coming on to Dr. Ned, albeit in a clumsy fashion. She has also inadvertently established herself as a slacker, although she tried to walk that back. Or are we reading too much into KM's awkward writing?

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled "In Which You Can Either Read This As A Metaphysical Treatise On Adulting Or The Alternative Lyrics To Whip It By Devo."

Work grind!
That...like. Change pace!
Wrong! Like! Vibe this!

I wonder why Ned Dreamy got divorced. He's handsome, educated, and well off. So what happened? Something's wrong with this picture.

Dawn seems to have no clue what's going on* & is just saying stuff that sounds like what people would say.

*Or I'm just projecting my own bafflement. Work Grind sounds like a setting on a coffee machine.

@Scottie - maybe Ned got divorced because he keeps dating/seducing college temps . . .

Dawn sure knows how to pick men. You would think Mary would have meddled Dawn into a good relationship by now. Another "same song different verse" story we must suffer through.

Good way to thank Dr. Dreamy for taking you out to dinner, Dawn. Tell him that you find working for him a real grind. Sheesh...

I've always found it successful after starting new jobs to talk about what a grind they are at work lunches. This might explain why Dawn is a 'temp' and not a 'permanent.'

Would have loved to hear Dr. Ned respond to the grind comment with, "That's what my second husband said when he temped at Medical Group." We could enjoy an awkward pause, Dawn being oblivious, and then return to Charterstone for a pool party and new plot.

Question of the week: Can a skilled and experienced doctor, wise in the ways of adulting, be attracted to a teenaged college student for anything more than an easy seduction? Although we are entering into the realm of sexual harassment, I doubt that this is the road that KM is going down because it would portray Dawn as aware and competent and not easily swayed by a predator. By the way, what do you think KM has against Dawn having an age appropriate romance?

Doesn't anyone in the Santa Royale have a real job?

Dawn: Perpetual college student
Iris: Perpetual college student
Tommy: Fired as a janitor, unemployed?
Wilbur: Working on a book?
Toby: Small figurine sculptor

Okay... Ian: the insecure (untenured) Professor is the "overachiever" in the bunch - deserving of the trophy wife. Mr. John Dill had to leave Santa Royale for NYC.

Does anyone ever graduate from "College"?

KM simply crafts around what she knows....

I'm guessing Dawn must be older than 21 since she is swilling wine at dinner with Dr. Ned...
I notice HE is drowning his divorce sorrows in a stiff drink as well. This can lead to no good when they get to that moment when a decision must be made on when/how to part...

I think it's because there are hardly ever any age-appropriate romances in the strip in general. There was Iris and Zack, Mary and Olive, and Dawn and her professor. Then there's Ian and Toby, and the weird pseudo-relationship thing with Mary and Dr Jeff. Normal relationships are taboo in Santa Royale.

Can we run whatever Dawn is saying through the Star Trek universal translator? I can't figure it out.
