Mary Worth 2933

Just leave out the part about selling tainted meth to her dad, and she'll be fine.

How far has Tommy come? He’s working at a low-skill job, living with Ma, and sporting the same messy hair and rumpled clothes. Tomorrow, Mary will intone, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!”

Apparently Mary doesn’t love Jeff because she had no problem hiding Ted Miller’s assault from him. (Ted Miller - what a character!)

Mary’s hoisting that pitcher with her left hand.

We have lemon slices in the lemonade and lemon wedges on the cutting board. Do the wedges magically shape-shift into slices when immersed in liquid? Also, there's a whole lemon on the board but no knife. Do the lemons cut themselves? There's so much I don't understand about this strip.

Tommy, "Brandy (Not the drink), I have to be honest with you...I love you, but I sold drugs and went to the pokey for it and now I can never get a Federal job."

Bandy, "Tommy (not The Who album), I love you to! I also have to be honest. You know that STD outbreak in France in the news....?"

"You're not that person anymore. You've come a long way. You don't have that horrible man bun you had when you were selling meth."

"Struggled"? Past tense? Tommy, based on this situation, you are struggling, present tense.

Frankly, I'm not sure where Mary is coming from here. The absolute last thing Brandy needs in her life is a three or four time loser like Tommy.

Of course, if Tommy were a real life recovering ex-convict, he most likely would've burned out his frontal lobes years ago and, while maybe still being able to present himself as a 'nice' recovering ex-convict, would lack the impulse control required to keep himself from stealing Mary's flatware the moment her back is turned... nevermind maintaining sobriety at the same time he's trying to engage in an adult relationship with someone with as many issues as Brandy.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"The Wiser Advice Is Given By Boldface Haiku".

Jail, selling drugs, addiction, leave!
Not. Long.
Think tell?
Impossible...especially love!

@KitKat--Great analysis of the situation offered in today's strip! I so want to give the illustrator/inker credit for some subliminal messaging because it all fits together so well today.

There's the Lemons/Lemonade adage, the pathetic irony of Mary not following her own advice about keeping secrets from someone you love, Tommy's hand reaching out in Panel 1, but Mary's response is two closed hands, and the great opposite meaning offered in the boldfaced words. This is the kind of stuff I loved getting my students to notice in writing and advertising.

To be fair to Mary Jeff pretty much brushed her off when she tried to tell him about Ted the Character.
Now I feel dirty.
