Tommy has never been in a relationship with a woman long enough for it to reach the abusive stage. Tommy and methamphetamine, however, have quite a lengthy history.
I'm home from vacation, and secret messages will return! Here are some pictures.
Great pictures, Wanders. In Bemidji, Minnesota, realprof and I took pictures of the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues posed with my plushie Zippy (the Kangaroo mascot of the University of Akron). Good times. I’m also reminded of the recent arc in Rex Morgan where a father and son duo were touring odd tourist sites on a cross-country trip. Things actually happen in the other soap opera strips, it seems.
Wow Wanders, you were in my (adopted) state, Maine. I see you did the "touristy" things like LL Bean and taste of Maine. Did you go to Big Al's? (It's right near Taste of Maine. He sells junk. You can go there five years from now and they still have the same junk.) I hope you had a great time. This is the best time to see Maine. Don't get snookered like I did by my husband who brought me up here in the summer and never bothered telling me the horrors of Maine winters. Seriously, I hope you had a great time.
Anyway, back to Brandy and Tommy. They're close enough to the water and I'm hoping that Brandy pushes him in. I am curious as to why all of these dangerous areas surrounding water have no barriers. Santa Royale is one step away from a lawsuit. I'm liking the look on Brandy's face in the second panel. She seems far more distressed that he's had a love affair with demon rum and meth than beating women.
Ha! You're in my neck of the woods! You drove past my house.
I, meanwhile, was out with my Scout troop camping and canoeing for three days on the Penobscot River.
As for Brandy, her reaction made me spit out my coffee. "No, but my neighbor Wilbur is abused BY women. They rip out his heart and stomp on it about every other story line."
Wanders, if you're ever back in New England, I recommend The Paper House on Cape Cod. It's a one-story three- or four-room cabin made entirely of rolled-up newspapers. It cost us $1 each to visit back in the '90s. No one was there when we arrived at suppertime, so we just deposited our dollars in the mailbox and gave ourselves our own tour. It was a hoot, and it looks like the kind of thing you'd enjoy.
Also, good catch on the placement of the bench. Man, how does this continually happen?
Sorry if this is nit-picky, Scottie McW, but I think The Paper House you recommended seeing is actually in Rockport, at Cape Ann, not Cape Cod. I live on Cape Cod and as far as I know, we don't have any paper houses here.
Boy, it seems like everyone (okay, the really cool people) I know are visiting Maine. I sure wish I was! Wanders, I’m gratified and impressed that you continued to post last week. Brandy and Tommy certainly didn’t add sparkle to your days.
I wonder why KM went with the passive voice with the narration today. Why not, “When Tommy tells Brandy that he has some things in common with her father...”? Too bad Brandy didn’t reply, “Well not your hair - dad had neat, trimmed hair. That was the only good thing about him.”
Plenty of people enjoy Maine vacations. My family, not so much.
My last memory of Maine was a terrifying roller coaster ride in Old Orchard Beach. It wasn't a really fast coaster. It was wood, and shook so much the banging gave me a headache for 3 hours. The safety bar was so loose on the 8 year old that I had to hang onto her for the entire ride.
Downpuppy, you will be happy(?) to know that rickety roller coaster is still in Old Orchard Beach. My husband knows better than to take me there. He took me there once when we were first dating and I told him rides weren't my thing. The only time I go to OOB is to visit my mother-in-law, who lives a mile from the beach. She's a feisty old lady who calls the cops on the "summer complaints" (our word for tourists) that park in her driveway and walk to the beach. (Parking is at a premium there and people get charged $10.00 to park near the beach, so people will park on the streets and walk.)
Wanders: You must've gone past my house (well, within a mile) when you crossed over into Maine. I've never eaten at Taste o' Maine but have been by it many times and will do so again tomorrow en route to Spruce Head Island. Anyway, welcome back.
The Comics Kingdom says this is Lazy Day and asked various "cartoonists" if they ever goof off when faced with deadlines. KM had this to say: "People who cartoon are not lazy, believe you me! But I definitely have procrastination moments where I leave my writing to do something else. Multi-tasking is not ideal, even though it’s sometimes necessary. The creative Muse will come and go when it will and any artist or writer will tell you that you have to catch and use that Muse when it alights on your shoulder. Otherwise if it slips out of your grasp, that idea or creative wave you’re riding may be gone, not to return until it wants to again! Deadlines and the Muse keep me from becoming lazy."
I'm kind of thinking it's past time for her to jump off the particular creative wave she's been riding.
Actually the Lazy Day post on Comics Kingdom is from August 10, 2016, which may explain what happened to Karen Moy's "creative wave"... My guess is KM's current wave was last seen coming from QEII....
Tommy's still being misleading here. He wasn't just an addict - when he got out of prison, he got angry when his mother suggested he get a job or go to college and he immediately started dealing meth. He went to a college and tried to get students to start taking meth.
I definitely think Moy's Creative has come and gone. Like, long gone.
That wording for the narration is really weird. If she wanted to reference Brandy's point of view, why not, "When Brandy hears that Tommy has some things in common with her father..." I also think he makes it sound like his addiction was a long time ago. Hasn't he only been sober for a year? Seems like it would have been more honest to say, "I've only recently dealt with an alcohol and drug problem."
And yes, thought bubbles and milk tears ahead. It's sort of like champagne dreams and caviar wishes, but much, much worse.

Wanders! Those pix make me wish I could find the photo of 2-year old me next to Babe The Big Blue Ox. Sigh.
Today's Boldface Haiku is titled
"World's Worst Dating Game Episode Gets Marginally Better".
Abuse women?
No, never!
Alcohol, drug problem!

Tommy's acting more like a 15 year old rather than someone who's been 25 for 25 years.
Nance, love the "Dating Game" reference...I'm surprised Mary isn't chaperoning their date.

Brandy: You like Star Trek, too?
@ Anon 11:58 a.m.
You are, of course, correct. We were in Cape Ann. We didn't make it to Cape Cod.
We also went Full Tourist in Salem and Glouscester, among other places. That trip was a ball, one of our best ever.
