@Chester the Dog, I looked at the ticket prices for One World Observatory. Hugo being the snob he is, I expect he looked down his nose at Standard (General Admission, $36) and wanted the All-Inclusive (“Experience the Best,” $58) with priority lane, security, and more.
Actually, I’m surprised Hugo would lower himself to do the typical touristy things. He and Dawn haven’t had a romantic tête-à-tête in an exclusive bistro that excludes the hoi polloi. Maybe he’s doing things like that on the side with Brigitte the Blonde, who also accompanied him to NYC.
"What a time in the big city!" Said no one ever, not even people whose first language is not English.
Meanwhile . . .
"Dawn, ma cherie, would you like ze vanilla or ze chocolate?"
"Ummm, I guess I'll have the chocolate. No wait, I really like vanilla. But I like chocolate too. So I'll have that. No, on second thought, I think I will have the vanilla. Although . . . [ad infinitum, ad nauseum]."
Okay, since Hugo is spending every day sight-seeing with Dawn, he's either forgotten that he's supposed to be here to work or... he lost his job! I suspect that last summer Dawn cluelessly told him about Wilbur's apparently deep pockets, and now Hugo is planning on scamming him.
I wonder how Hugo is going to explain all this sight seeing to his boss in gay Paree when the bill for the corporate credit card comes in. Perhaps Dawn stole Wilbur's corporate credit card. (The same one he used to buy Fabiana's 30K emerald.)
Scottie McW, you are so right. No tourist or even someone from NY (like myself) would ever say "What a time in the big city". I despise Hugo with each passing day. This is not to say that I am liking Dawn any better. She whined and cried when Hugo told her that the long distance thing wasn't going to work. They tried it and proclaimed they were "Madly and deeply in love" and now she's mooning over Jared. I bet when Dawn shakes her head it rattles.
I'd like to see three floating heads tomorrow - Jared floating head thinking of Dawn, Dawn floating head thinking of Jared, and Hugo floating head thinking of France.
Perhaps Hugo does not actually live in Paris, but instead lives in the French version of Hooterville of "Green Acres" fame. Only this could explain his use of "the Big City" in describing New York. Inquiring minds (at least mine) would also like to know why someone (likely not Dawn) says "C'est incroyable"in the first panel, followed by Hugo saying "incredible" in the second. Was KM nervous that the idea of Dawn speaking French was so improbable she had to have Hugo translate? Or was Hugo so impressed with America that he had to resort to speaking English in honor? What's Dawn going to do if Hugo gets transferred to the Santa Royale office of Le Petit Schlepper?
So many great comments today. meg, that was hilarious. And Regina, if Dawn's head rattles when it shakes, that would imply that there was at least something in it. I think that's optimistic.
r u ok, or would Hugo's head be thinking of Brigitte? Or Brigitte in France? Or himself in France? He is pretty self-absorbed.
I keep thinking maybe he'll notice how frowny Dawn is all the time, but as many have pointed out, they never look at each other. SO we probably won't hear Hugo say, "Dawn, ma cherie, my dear, what is wrong? Qu'est que c'est? You are not happy in this big city which is incroyable, but still not as great as French cities?"
Terrific comments today, everyone! Isn’t it wonderful that KM’s banality inspires us to such heights?
Dawn’s Jared-Hugo muddling reminded me of the song “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love” from “Finian’s Rainbow,” where the leprechaun Og muses that he loves two human females. Here’s a stanza (adjusted for gender) that Dawn could sing if she had both talent and a brain:
Oh, my heart is beating wildly And it’s all because you’re here If I’m not near the boy I love I love the boy I’m near.

Who is paying for all this? A trip to One WTC Observatory is at least 50 bucks a person!
And I am sure Dawn wanted to see Hamilton because she thought it was a musical about the actress from the Terminator movies.
Please go on the subway and run into Olive. She'll bang some clarity into you, Dawn.

Still waiting on the floating head of Jared....
Today's Boldface Haiku is titled
"Reminds Me Of Dave".
What a view!
C'est incroyable!
Incredible!
Yes...
(Enjoying.
Jared...)

Oh, Hugo, wasn’t that mime in Washington Square annoying?
Oui, but the mimes in Paris are even more annoying. Even the great Marcel Marceau was in Incroyablement annoying.
Hugo, how funny was the guitar-playing Naked Cowboy in Times Square?
The garçon de vache in Paris is actually naked, not just wearing his underpants. And...he’s playing the accordion.
Rockefeller Center?
La Defense.
Trump Tower?
Tour Eiffel.
Rat dragging a slice of pizza?
Pigeon carrying away a rat dragging a croque monsieur.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral?
Dawn, how can you be so cruel?

Ha haaaa! Funny stuff, meg!

Just to note, another day where Hugo doesn't look at Dawn, or mention her.

Dawn goes from "How can I break such a heart" to "I miss Jared so much" that it's a wonder she doesn't have a whiplash collar on. I know I need one.

Bingo! Yahtzee! We have a winner! Is that your final answer? Our survey says...Jared!
With apologies to Bruce Almighty.
Nominating "Such Great Heights" for the Chartersone Juke Box. (And fairly apt for the current times, as well.)
