LouiseF, that was quite an accomplishment and I give you my most sincere felicitations on your ability to predict Karen so precisely. And I think June did a great job depicting Helen’s haggard and deranged binocular staring. (Though it would’ve been even more fun if Helen used an old-timey spyglass or commandeered the SRCc astronomy department’s telescope). Oh, if only Toby had taken Cal up on his offer to sit awkwardly to one side by the carnivorous boulder outcrop!
Let’s not jump to conclusions. Helen could be addressing that elusive Ivory Billed Woodpecker she’s been searching for decades!
That’s quite a philosophy Cal has worked out. Failing English class? Ignore it. Tuition bill due but no funds? Ignore it? Mom’s washer and dryer are unavailable because I stopped paying Mom the rent I agreed to pay? Ignore it and keep wearing the same clothes day after day.
One important aspect of telling a visual story is making sure the audience knows which direction they are looking at. Like in a fight scene in a movie, it's important that the camera stays on the same side of the room, unless there is a definite smooth transition that is clearly shown through the camera movement. If it just snaps to the other side, the audience has to figure out who's who again, and it takes them out of moment of the fight.
What I'm getting at is that the hill Toby and Cal are sitting on is going down to the right. Meddles Magoo is looking up to the right. The camera shifted to the other side and so it feels like she's not looking in the right direction to see her prey. So perhaps @KitKat is right.
Wonder if Meddles Magoo was the original town meddler but Mary usurped her by adding muffins? So Meddles is trying to take back the crown by adding spying equipment?
Tomorrow-- Helen (continuing to "monitor" the school through her binoculars): "What's this? Professor Ian Cameron without the benefit of clothing in his classroom? No wonder his wife is a trollop! Action must be taken! Off to the Dean's office. Wait ... I am the Dean."
Late that same night (7:30PM) at Mary’s apartment, an emergency meeting of the MOBC (Meddling Old Biddies Committee) is convened. Helena Handbasket is Vice Crone, and Mary gladly, nay, eagerly, acceded to her request. If there is meddling required in Santa Royale, Mary intends to be a part of it.
Now we need Cal to lean in for a sweet, brotherly hug to cheer up Toby. Toby won't have a clue, of course, that this might be inappropriate. But Helen is gonna fall off her chair.

I see Cal is a graduate of the Mary Worth school of life coaching.

"But Cal, how can I ignore you when you won't go away?"
