Going by the wistful look on Mary’s face and her remark about Ian being “not easily forgotten,” I’m wondering if Mary and Ian had a highland fling of their own. The doves of remembered love are flapping outside the window. Could it be? I guess….
I always appreciate your posts, Wanders, but your response to the deflating conclusion of this story made me laugh out loud. "I guess. Doesn't seem likely, but whatever." That's exactly how this is wrapping up. In some ways, the most absurd story yet? Oh well, let's get ready to check in with Wilbur on Monday.
Now, now.. All we know is what Ian TOLD Toby. It could be that Ian said "This has to stop", because he and Helen have been having a torrid affair CURRENTLY. The wistful look on Toby's face makes me think she is less certain of Ian than her words convey. A girl can DREAM that there's a steamy plot here somewhere....
@Yahoonski, thank you! The doves of remembered love used to appear when Mary thought of the departed Dear Jack. Mary hasn’t mentioned him in ages. I recall a number of years ago when Mary was giving temporary shelter to an acquaintance in need. The woman was clumsy (and possibly tipsy), and she broke the lovebirds music box that Dear Jack had given Mary. Mary came close to reading the klutz the riot act, but her true Mary nature stayed her hand. That episode may be in Wanders’s excellent archives, but I have no idea how far back that goes.
In his position of power and authority, the good professor has abused young and impressionable women. Quite simply put, he is an unethical predator. He should be investigated, and his employment terminated. He is "not easily forgotten" for a disturbing reason. Get a clue Toby and Mary. Is there even one admirable character in this strip?
We could be witnessing the genesis of a new MW plot model. From now on, no actual characters will appear in the strip. They will be referred to, as in today's installment, but plot action will only be recounted to Mary. Mary can then counter with 'Oh Dear', 'How did he do that' or 'I guess...' Even the artwork can be economized by simply changing the color of the clothing. It's downsizing, MW style!
I’m optimistic. I believe that Helen will stage a home invasion at Chez Cameron and hold Toby at glue gunpoint. Mary’s biddie-sense will tingle, and she will proceed immediately, taking a plate of just-baked tatties and neep muffins (Ian’s favorite). First, she’ll peer through the window, then she’ll throw a muffin through it to break the glass. Helen will be knocked out cold when the muffin hits her head. Officers Toody and Muldoon, Santa Royale’s finest, will arrive and arrest Helen for B&E; Mary will be taken into custody for assault with a deadly baked good.
Next scene: Ian arrives home and shouts at Toby about the broken window; Saul and Eve stroll by and recommend getting a dog for protection: All Together Now: “Dogs are Great!”
@Carlye, I was hoping someone would remember that incident and the details - hurrah for you, and many thanks. Oh for another occasion when the real Mary emerges!
@meg, "assault with a deadly baked good" - hahahahahaha etc. etc.! Mary's muffins are lethal in more ways than one.
@Carlye and @Kitkat thank you for that blast from the meddling past. For some reason I vividly remember Mary passive aggressively going on about how her precious shattered swans were an irreplaceable memory of Dear Jack "because they mate for life!".
I guess. Toby is more into goldfinches these days because they have a keen eye and are total sluts.

“Your husband’s not easily forgotten.” A statement not easily made with a straight face. It’s usually delivered with a shudder and a cringe.

Meanwhile, Helen is at home watching “Fatal Attraction”. Thank goodness the Cameron’s don’t own a bunny. Or a dog.
"Doves of remembered love" makes KitKat the Internets Winner du jour.
Bzzzzzz. Wrong answer, Toby. Instead of "I know" your response to Mary should have been, "What do you mean by that, $!+@#?"
I'm with everyone else here who is sorely disappointed not to find out what transpired between Helen and Ian after the hug.
"THESE CRAPPY ENDINGS HAVE GOT TO STOP!"
Hey, it worked with Helen. Maybe it will work with KM.

KitKat, as I recall, Mary wasn't that forgiving. She drove the woman (Rita?) downtown and dumped her at a seedy women's shelter.
