"That's funny. I used to babysit a boy who called me Nan."

The reason his Nan is his former babysitter, Iris, is because Zak now has you.
The white rice with hamburger gravy looks fuzzy, and the roasted glazed carrots look bleached - yum! Iris is holding a fork, but does she have her own plate today?
Okay, so long ago, Zak told Iris about this scrumptious meal he ate as a kid. But he didn't mention who made it?
And what's with this "my" Nan business? Wouldn't he more likely say "Nan made it for me." or "My babysitter made it for me." Good thing the sitter's name wasn't Carmen.
Unlike you, I fear that we are about to have the Zak/Iris version of the Mary/Jeff mutual admiration society chatfest we have lately endured. Followed by Saul/Eve, and Jared/Tess, and Stellan/Willa, and Ian/Toby. Apparently Moy has just finished reading Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking.” See you on New Years Eve, kids.
Perhaps Iris is aware that National Babysitters' Day comes annually on the day before Mother's Day, so she has to give credit for Zak's exceptional upbringing to Nan before mentioning his parents. Either that or she's angling to ask Zak for a loan, a la Drew's Ashlee.
This is starting out even weirder than the name of that Gaelic rock band that they both allegedly like.
I’m really hoping though that this is a setup for them both having a hilariously foreshadowed chance encounter with His Nan, only to kick off an epic Helen Moss style midlife crisis for Iris after being confronted with the fact that Nan’s over a decade younger than her. We need clarity, dammit!
There seems to me to be some--conscious or unconscious on the part of our Moy--wordplay going on wherein "Nan" refers not only to the fondly remembered person being named Nancy, but also to her being to Zak like a NANNY (my Nanny!) --maybe she babysat very often, or just that she had such a strong influence on her charge.

I know, I know, but his conversation is still far better than what we were put through the past two weeks.

Did Nan have a boyfriend named Sluggo? Or was he Slug for short?
Yes, the "my Nan" thing is just weird given that Nan is short for someone's name.
If I had a babysitter named Jennifer, I wouldn't call her "my Jen," unless I was trying to be creepy.
