I do feel that a certain amount of explanation is due here. "We are happy living together, but I would rather we were married because…" This isn't the 1950s after all, nobody's branding Iris with a scarlet A because she's Living In Sin.
Don't get me wrong, there are lots of good reasons to get married, but it's not the default and inevitable choice for a relationship any more.
@RogerBW - Oh Roger, Roger, Roger, you big old silly! This is the Worthiverse and in the Worthiverse every woman needs a man! And that's all she'll ever need; a man! Don't you know that the only way a woman will ever be happy is once she gets a man?! And she NEEDS to marry that man! And she needs a man to TELL her she needs to be married in order to be happy. See?
MissScarlet - Shush! Mary is Master of the Worthiverse. Do not let her hear you questioning the Laws of Her Land! SHE knows better but the other women in this strip are her puppets; they exist solely for her entertainment.
@Scottie McW., the suspense is getting to all of us. Every time Zak looks back at Iris is an opportunity for a stumble. Dehydration is a possibility too since neither of them has water, much less equipment.
MissScarlet - I agree that despite Iris’ assurances she’s fine, she’s not looking so good. Judging by her bulging eyeballs, I’d say she’s suffering from a lack of oxygen. The elevation at Piccadee Falls must be a lot higher than we thought.
meg - Correct! This trip will end with the least interesting possibility imaginable. Iris and Zak will have an uneventful hike. The climatic ending will happen when they arrive back at Zak’s condo to find that they forgot to refrigerate the leftover hamburger gravy!

A scene out of “The Sound of Music”? Is there a troop of Nazi soldiers waiting on the other side of those boulders?
@meg was on fire yesterday!
The hills are alive, but the relationship isn’t.

I get the impression that Zak is not accustomed to ANYONE saying no to him. His behavior is straying into Wilbur territory at this point...
Apologies, everyone. I'm not sure why my comments have posted twice the past few days.

Sing it, Mary!

Why would Zak, a dude in his early 20s, be familiar with songs from "The Sound of Music?"
Unless...maybe he wants to marry Iris so she can be his 'beard?' Hmm.
He's not THAT familiar with "The Sound of Music". It's "ford every stream", not "swim every sea". But then it wouldn't rhyme with "marry me".
Zak, give it a rest - nobody likes desperate.
But HelenClark, how can you explain Mary and Jeff?
MissScarlet - Shush! Mary is Master of the Worthiverse. Do not let her hear you questioning the Laws of Her Land! SHE knows better but the other women in this strip are her puppets; they exist solely for her entertainment.

Uh-oh, looks like Wanders couldn't take it anymore.

Zak should be thrown into Picadee Falls just for subjecting us to a week of him patronizing Iris.
For some reason, today's strip made me think that Iris will soon have a massive heart attack. That would be interesting, anyway.
You're right, HelenClark, what was I thinking? (head slap)
The way I see it, there are several possibilities here:
1. Someone gets sick or injured.
2. Natural disaster, flood, fire.
3. Captured by family of insane mountain men (Ashlee’s brothers).
4. Lost in the woods, bickering and recriminations ensue.
My guess: the least interesting possibility is most likely.
