I love when people quote Shakespeare and have no idea what they're talking about. The actual speech begins:
If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
Duke Orsino is suggesting that if he listens to enough music, it will be like eating too much food, and help kill his love and desire for Lady Olivia. Get it? It's just like when you read a lot of Mary Worth and you lose your appetite.

Toby, who in their right mind is going to take relationship advice from somebody who married Ian Cameron?
Doubtless Prof Cameron had to flee to America for his own safety because anybody in Scotland who tried behaving in the pompous, snide, disparaging manner that he habitually displays would have his face kicked off.
... which is why Scotland is such a world power.
On the other hand, maybe Toby knows exactly what she's saying. I'm betting she's been "surfeited" nigh unto death listening to Mary prattle on all these years and she'd love for the both of those old goats to sicken and die.
Shoots and Leaves: Excellent point, but are you forgetting to read your free secret messages?
anonymous Yes, that is exactly the sort of rude and unnecessary remark that Ian Cameron would make. Thank you for helping to validate my point.
WandersSecret Messages are always a treat, and cholesterol-free to boot.
Why do the MW characters NEVER cite the source of their little aphorisms? Sometimes they add a little box to do it for them, but honestly, would it be so hard for Toby to just credit Shakespeare? I know, I know, it would sound artificial and stiff, unlike the completely conversational tone of "As it's been said..." But then why not just SAY it, instead of observing that it's "been said"? Is Toby afraid Mary will think she's spontaneously speaking in Elizabethan blank verse unless she prefaces it with a disclaimer?
Just wondering why Toby is so formal -- she speaks of mary's beau as "Dr. Cory" -- i guewss that's the polite way at Charterstone. "After all, we've really haven't been introduced...."
D'oh! Darn useless decoder ring, always letting me down. I thought the secret message was "Drink Ovaltine."
Oh, for crying out loud!!! Why don't we just cut to Ecclesiastes 1:9 "there is nothing new under the sun", and get on with things already?!?
Toby thinks she's up to Mary's level when it comes to platitudes, but the Dark Queen will always be able to wither the unsusspecting novice with one of her patented Armegeddon Glares.
Pray tell dear Mary, thou shouldst hold firm to thy good and loved thing. Couldst thou say my manner comes across inflexable as mine hair appears... As it has been said, what ho! Does not that arbor's branch outside the window bring forth a vision to tempt our minds to remember Hobbs of ye old strip known as Calvin & Hobbs?
Weeeeeeeeeeeee
Just when I think Mary Worth cannot possibly get worse. Now I know why the former author used Mary primarily as a means to introduce a new story line. Would someone please tell me how to get in touch with Karen Moy? I would like to urge her to retire before she becomes a laughing stock...oops, too late. By the way, to write a character like Mary, wouldn't one have to be somewhat like her? Poor, poor Mr. Moy.
It has now been exactly two weeks since Mary and Jeff reunited...and they're still talking about it! And the way things are going now, it's looking like we'll get to enjoy this exciting story for even longer! What fun!
Admit it, people; this is the reason we're all Mary Worth fans...the snappy dialogue and swift story resolution is almost too exciting to take!
nathan: The current "bowl of trite liberally sprinkled with platitudes" episode began last Wednesday and should have run its course by Sunday.
Now that Moy has quoted Shakespeare, she'll probably move into the British romantic poets and then jump to 19th and 20th century American writers--unless she wants to throw in some Goethe and Tolstoy for good measure along the way...
bornreadyYou can write to Karen Moy c/o King Features. I hope you have better luck than I did when I sent a letter begging for Chester to come back.
shandyowl, John Saunders was the previous author who died in 2003. Were you thinking of Chester Gould who wrote Dick Tracy?
Anon, shandyowl was referring to Chester the Dog who Mary Worth rescued, but then returned to his owner. It was pretty heartbreaking, and Shandyowl hasn't been able to get over it, even after all this time.
