The Goethe Gauntlet has been thrown:
Iris: The soul that sees beauty...
Mary: ... may sometimes walk alone.
Mary: Being brilliant is no great feat...
Iris: ... if you respect nothing.
Iris: It is not doing the thing we like to do...
Mary: ... but liking the thing we have to do, that makes life blessed.
Mary: He only earns his freedom and his life...
Iris: ... who takes them every day by storm.
... Three hours later
Mary: There is nothing in which people more betray their character...
Iris: ... Erm... Uh... I can't go on... You win. You win. Mary Worth you remain the Queen of Quotations.

The longer the quote swapping goes on, the less chance of Tommy remaining sober, or even alive. Even now he looks like he's contemplating sticking a fork in his eye. He is realizing that prison really wasn't so bad after all.
Yes, prison would be much more appealing than spending one more minute with Mary, Iris and Wilbur. Besides, the food is better. The problem may be convincing a jury that, whatever his next crime is, it wasn't justifiable.
"Tell me with whom you associate, and I will tell you who you are." -Goethe
Who even has a favorite Goethe quote, much less one of several? I would have believed "carpe diem" or "grab the bull by the horns" but this is ridiculous.
Anyone else hearing "Dueling Banjos" as background music?
Does this mean Iris will be pursuing a degree in German Literature? I just hope that in tomorrow's strip, Iris grabs Mary's scarf ends and pulls tightly. Very tightly.
Gotta love me some Goethe! I bet Tommy will be quoting Werther as soon as the dinner party is over: "How happy I am to have gotten away!"
Everyone I know has multiple favorite Goethe quotes. Bring it on, Mary Worth!
LOL - Jive Hands! How I love this blog entry!!
“Nothing shows a man's character more than what he laughs at.” - Goethe
Hey, wait a minute... is that a love connection happening between Mary and Iris? The way they're intensely gazing into each other eyes suggests Wilbur better rethink giving up the "Ask Wendy" column!
Sunday.
Ah, blueberry pie. Tommy perks up in the hope that something edible will be served.
Unfortunately, it's Mary's special recipe: blueberry-salmon with a delightfully spongy kelk crust.
Seinfeld fans: Do you think "there's a chance they might somehow kiss?"
In he Worthiverse, "Goethe" translates to "It has been said....."
Monday
Iris must be desperate for male attention if Wilbur's clumsy remark gets her head to swivel like that. Tommy goes from prissy simpering to a big frowny face: "Oh no, he's fixing to become my step dad!" Actually, Tommy and Dawn as step siblings presents possibilities. In the first panel, Tommy's helmet hair is very Dawn-like.
I'm still stuck on Saturday:
Iris: "Age is just a number."
Wilbur, in his thought bubble: "One..is the loneliest number that you'll ever do..."
And that followed up with iris' wicky-wicky-wicky-wow-wow hand on the turntable pose....
Actually, I do have a favorite Goethe quote: "Deny yourself! You must deny yourself!"
If only I could apply that to Mary Worth.
Pity we don't hear this read out loud, then we could find out if Mary Worth knows how to correctly pronounce Goethe.
It's Go-eth, right?
Monday: I'm thinking Tommy won't be digesting much of anything after seeing mommy Iris running off with Wilbur.
