Even better is KM's decision to finally explicate the anagram SAMHSA today, after all this time. That and the generic quote by Patrick Kennedy in the title panel. It sounds like something from any pamphlet, highschool health text, or school film narration.
I thought that the panel with Iris cursing would've been Wanders's choice for today. Iris has really crazy eyes in that panel!
Does anyone read "Rex Morgan, MD" here? It's really weird, but over there they're doing a praise-fest about how wonderful Rex is and how he changed everyone's lives for the better. I thought I was reading "Mary Worth"! After Iris calls the number, I hope we'll get treated to a week of Mary's being praised ... no matter that she doesn't deserve it!
(Whoa! Panel #3) Wanders, with your permission, I'd like to issue this rejoinder to Iris Beedie: We'd love to hear what you have to say about Tommie Beedie. Just keep it clean, that's all we ask. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY panel #3. We don't want to moderate your parenting, but we will if we have to. Thank you.
Just to reinforce fauxprof's referencing the Akron headline regarding 8 heroin deaths, Karen Moy is now my heroine, having not only explained the acronym SAMHSA but finally running the hotline number. We can laugh about it, but considering we had 10 heroin deaths in Cuyahoga County just over the Labor Day Weekend, any conscientious reader of "Mary Worth" (ARE there readers of MW who are NOT conscientious?) will store that number away for future use with a family member or friend. Whatever it takes with this epidemic...What's next? Mary Worth swats at a zika-carrying mosquito...
LouiseF at 10:48 AM makes a good point. Introducing the SAMHSA hotline is much better than leaving things at Mary's advice to Iris that she spend more time mothering Tommy. So, a grudging tip of the cap to Karen Moy. I sure hope that the ellipsis in today's first panel ("We can help...") is followed by "if he's willing" tomorrow.
Anonymous at 4:01 PM yesterday, thanks for the reference to Dr. Nick Riviera!
Maybe KM read my comment from the other day to "go out into the real world to see how it works". Whatever motivated her, it's better than when she had Mary give the smug advice to "spend more time" with Tommy Boy. I still vote Iris for the most clueless person in Worthverse. (Second runner-up Dawn, for not realizing that hanging out with your professor may be just a little inappropriate.)
Interesting thread on the Seattle PI Mary comment section, about possible stopping of comments on comics at the end of the year. Apparently Ms. Roy linked to this article.
I might be alone here, but I find the use of bold lettering in the new Mary Worth to be very odd. I did a quick, unscientific poll of today’s other soap-opera strips, and “Gil Thorp” and “Mark Trail” didn’t use any bold letters, and “Rex Morgan, MD” and “Judge Parker” used them judiciously, for only two or one words, respectively. I just think that the call center at SAMHSA (or whatever) would hardly emphasize the words that are in bold. ... “CAN I HELP YOU?” ... “WE CAN HELP HIM ...” are just ... ODD! What will come next? ... “We CAN help him ... for a PRICE! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!”
Thank you, Wanders, for providing us with a forum for discussion, aesthetic contemplation, and ... SNARK!
Iris - "Hello, this is Iris Beedie. My son Tommy has an addiction to pain killers. I would like to set up an appointment with Doctor Leone."
Receptionist - "I'm sorry, Doctor Leone is out of the country for another 2 weeks. But I could set up an appointment with the Doctor covering his patients while he is out. Would tomorrow morning work?"
Iris - "Yes please. As early as possible."
Receptionist - You're all set. Tommy is scheduled to see Doctor Kaphut at 9:00."
Memo to Iris: It's evident Tommy needs help. But while you can make the appointment, drive him there, and frogmarch him into the Doctor's office, there's no guarantee he will accept the help. But you've got to try.
And, to end on a snarky note, congrats on finding your nose and upper lip. You look much better.
WEDNESDAY I'll be surprised if Iris doesn't haul Tommy into Dr. Leone's office and do all the talking. I'll be shocked if Dr. Leone asks Iris to leave so he can speak with Tommy in private.
As Dawn Weston's Evil Twin wrote yesterday, the overuse of boldface type is annoying as can be and seems random to boot, e.g., today's "I want you to see him as soon as I can arrange an appointment!" and Tommy's "Oh Ma!" Wouldn't "Oh Ma... be more likely?
In an effort to maintain her newly found realism, Karen Moy has Iris taking at least three days to contact the SAMHSA hotline, emote about the referral they are providing, and lecture Tommy about going to see the doc. By week's end, she may have an actual appointment for him, and THAT, friends, would be lightning speed these days for someone seeking a treatment program for opioid addiction.
@KitKat - I expect that not only will Iris be present during Tommy's appointment with Dr. Leone, but that she will be checking Mary's availability before she finalizes a date and time.

In today's powerful episode of Mary Worth, Iris finally gets a clue! Plus, she gets her nose back!
I think that "!@#!" = "heck" or "H-E-double hockey sticks." But I could be wrong. It might mean "golly gee whillikers."

HI everybody!
Hi Doctor Nick!
Tommy, I know a guy who can help.

9-12-16: They're going to need a little more help...getting home. Their car has no steering wheel.

Iris calls Doctor Leone.
Receptionist - "Doctors office."

In today's strip, Tommy looks just like I feel after reading it!
