Well, any guesses? I'm really scratching my head to come up with something I'd be interested in. I mean, seriously, what could Wilbur Weston, over-eating, lazy Wilbur Weston possibly have to tell us unless he's somehow figured out a way to pay his daughter's tuition bills. Because if he can pay a college tuition while writing a daily advice column for the local rag, with the occasional Survivor story, I want to know how. And I want in on the scheme.

My guess is that Wilbur met the woman of his dreams while in Japan, and will spend the next year hoping that a long-distance relationship will work out.
My guess is that the local shopper paper is run by an eccentric billionaire. He's going to send Wilbur on an extensive world tour of more recent disasters, like Haiti. In the meantime not only "Ask Wendy", but perpetual teenager Dawn, will be turned over to Mary. Wilbur has apparently forgotten about Iris, which is good news for the rest of us.
He's joined the Yakuza.
Soon he'll only have 3 fingers, just like Uncle Joe drew him.
Oh, it will be something entirely pedestrian, like his Editors have asked him to go on a world tour for the column. Or, he has decided to write a book, so he won't have time for two columns whilst he "researches" (holed up in the stacks at Library, certainly).
Maybe he's getting a Dog.
We can be sure of this:
1. It will take us far past Christmas.
2. He will thank Mary for it.
3. We still won't see any point to it, whatever it is.
4. No cakes will need to be decorated.
Remember when Kurt, Wilbur's bogus "son," turned up? Perhaps another child from Wilbur's wild youth contacted Wilbur on Facebook, and Wilbur is going to spend the next year flying kites with him/her.
BTW, why doesn't the syndicate that publishes Ask Wendy arrange for someone to take over the column? I don't believe Ask Wendy is legit. Wilbur has been scamming Mary all along to keep her from meddling into his life.
Do you suppose Mary receives any monetary compensation for writing the Ask Wendy column?
Do you suppose Wilbur has any concerns about the character of Wendy changing, along with the nature of the advice offered? Mary can't possible write and advise exactly like Wilbur.
Also, just noticed the Secret Message in today's Featured Panel. If you read only the Bold Words, Mary says,
HAPPY ADVISING YOU.
Sigh. Like that's really a Secret.
Ask Wendy has about as many readers as does Mary Worth, so no worries about anyone noticing a change in the character of the advice giving.
Wilbur is expecting.
I'm just happy WIlbur's been drawn with a tee shirt under his shirt so we don't have to look at is icky chest hair.
Wilbur has obviously joined Hair Club for Men and his comb-over strands have already increased dramatically. Meanwhile Mary and Iris have joined Eye Club for Women; they pop in a new set every few panels.
Why does Mary have her filthy old casserole-stained fingers all over Wilbur's bar of soap in P1, and why is he toasting her with it in P2?
He's having another hair implanted!
My guess is that Wilbur is adopting Tommy.
My guess is that Wilbur is going to write about the fateful cruise ship disaster next. He only writes about disasters long after they're mostly forgotten.
Wilber got the scoop on the new Hillary e-mails. He's been assigned to break the case open.
Ooh, I love it when Wilbur acts macho- just look at him crush that beer can!
2016 has 35 months?
SATURDAY
I know I called this development yesterday, but really, print media doesn't do things like that anymore. Even the New York Times would think twice about incurring the expense of a year long, round the world junket for a feature story. It's costly enough to cover he big news like war, terrorism and politics. Let's face it, even the broadcast outlets are feeling the competitive crunch of social media, and Wilbur is certainly no Christiane Amanpour.
Wilbur is making this up. He's taking another year to do whatever it is that he's been doing. And Mary will continue to do Ask Wendy for free.
What I'm wondering is, after this week will the strip follow Wilbur on his world tour, or Mary back home at her keyboard?
Wilbur's off somewhere moonlighting for a year, and even his editors don't know that someone else is submitting his column. What a great gig.
SUNDAY
Two comments:
1. WHA...??!!?? Instead of GIVING ADVICE, Mary the Meddler just says (passive-aggressively), "Well, good luck with THAT!"
2. Wilbur tells MARY his big news before he bothers to tell Dawn or Iris! Well, I suppose that's as it should be, after all.
Will WILBUR tell TOMMY? Or don't they have a pseudo-parental relationship yet? ... Hey! Why isn't Mary meddling Wilbur into SPENDING MORE TIME with the Tomster?
Karen Moy to the CEO of Comics Kingdom:
June Brigham and I are embarking on a world tour for the next year of strips in order to bring reality to the Weston-centric story. We believe that all fifty of our readers deserve realistically well drawn images of Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal and other sites which will serve as background for the stories. An Englishman concerned about the Brexit-related Marmite shortage; a Frenchwoman whose local bakery has closed; a citizen of India who has been swept up in the "IRS" telemarketing scandal are some the upcoming plots to enthrall our readers.
During this year, Mary and the other Charterstone characters will be mothballed and will return to the current plot on November 1, 2017. See ya!
Do you think Wilber noticed Harlan Jones shaving kit in the bathroom or that there was a lot his clothing in one of Dawns dresser drawers?
MONDAY
and we will spend the next week talking about Wilbur's decision. Hoo boy, wait till he finds out he's doing it on his own dime, no expense accounts. Plus paying the Charterstone rent, Dawn's tuition and living expenses, breach of promise suit from Iris...
The Worthiverse is a truly marvelous place, where the practicalities of life never intrude. I'm envious.
