Mary Worth 2494

Yesterday when Zak said he had an activity in mind that Iris MIGHT like, when it comes to bowling, "might" was a very important word in that sentence. Bowling is a declining sport in the U.S., and California has the third lowest number of bowling alleys per capita in the nation, making it seem to be hugely unpopular there. The odds of Iris actually enjoying bowling on a second date seem really slim. Asking your date, "Do you like to bowl?" would go a long way toward avoiding disaster, but embarrassing her with a bowling date definitely makes life more interesting. And if Zak is anything, he is embarrassing... I mean interesting.

It appears Zak is staring at Iris's Mom jeans rather than the bowling ball that has been tossed so hard as to create a rut in the alley.

I thought MW was supposed to be family friendly!

I'm just happy that Iris didn't come dressed as if she was going to a wedding, even if she is wearing her mom jeans.

There should be a thought bubble emanating from Iris's bowling ball in p. 2: CLUNK!!!!

As the research by Wanders revealed, bowling in California really is hugely unpopular. Iris and Zak have the place completely to themselves. After the bowling, they can go to the snack bar and microwave some fries.

I bet Wilbur never took Iris bowling.

I'll admit that I don't know - and don't want to know - anything about bowling. However, I do remember at some point, a reference to "ten-pin" bowling. If that is the case, then why are there 12 pins at the end of the lane to Iris' right?

Could this be Zak's nasty and not so subtle way of reminding Iris of old she is? Taking her on a date that women might have considered to be fun back in the '70's?

Iris is working the brown jeans!

"An activity you might like" = Bowling. If I were Iris, I don't know how I would take this.

She "might like" bowling because
1. It isn't too terribly strenuous for a Woman Her Age?
2. It isn't too terribly trendy or New, so she will feel comfortable doing it?
3. She can rent the proper shoes if she shows up in pumps?

Blech.

Possible reasons bowling is unpopular in California: 1.When it's 75 and gorgeous outside, who wants to be inside, surrounded by crashing sounds,dank-smelling carpets, and grease? 2.Being in the midst of all that wood could be dangerous when a nearby forest fire gets out of control. 3. Wood could be better used to make a surfboard for use in said outdoors. 4. Trees should be left to grow for about 500 years so as to provide a tunnel to drive your car through. Can't wait for Iris to regale Mary with the details of this date! I smell a muffin and decaf session coming soon.

Can't wait for the next "activity". Putt-Putt Golf, maybe?

Zak seems to be enjoying the view there.

LouiseF,
Not funny, but true...that tree that you could drive a car through fell down yesterday.

IDK, there were a lot of bowling alleys on Dragnet. Although they were always full of criminals, maybe that's why they declined.
I think Zak thinks Iris, being old, would appreciate bowling. Otherwise it would be disc golf or kickball.

Wonder if Tommy likes to bowl . . . sorry Tommy, no surprises for you. Until Zak moves in that is.

Sorry, Smooth and Regina Diva - but Iris isn't really wearing what are actually considered "mom" jeans. Those that sit at what we once all had - an actual waist. Iris' jeans are sitting at her hips... the brown color... well, I'm not so sure about that. Unfortunately, I suspect that there isn't anyone young enough, reading this blog, to straighten us out about that. Wanders, please consult your daughter.

Believe it or not, bowling is making a bizarre comeback in at least parts of the state (North Bay in my case) — according to my younger brother, old run-down alleys are reportedly being restored to their old splendor and becoming popular for kids' birthday parties.
