Entertainer Esme gets more standing ovation than anyone.

Big whoop! Nowadays, audiences give standing ovations to kindergarten rhythm band concerts. It's become an automatic gesture and has lost much of its meaning. However, I think Derek's enthusiasm is genuine, although his motivation may be questionable.

@fauxprof--What a terrific comment. I, too, have noted over the years at the meaninglessness of the Standing Ovation. Audiences are so easily impressed. I haven't been to a single performance of...anything, really, and not had it Standingly Ovated.

Today's Boldface Haiku is Cruelly Lacking.

Also, probably it is far too much to consider that KM's inspiration for her Esme is, in some symbolic way, this one.

I looked at the guy next to Entertainer Esme's right (or to our left) and now know what happened to David Soul. He's been traveling the high seas in the Bargain Cruise Line's "A Chorus Line" show. Nice that he's been getting steady work. Hey, you gotta take it where you can get it.

I second @fauxprof's comments. Standing ovations have become so commonplace that they're meaningless. And a standing O for a Bargain Cruise Lines show is the very definition of meaningless.

On the plus sign, I have observed that there is an inverse relationship between the quality (ahem!) of KM's plots and the comments on MW & Me. Wanders and all you people rock! The comments and observations since we set sail on this Ship of Fools have been priceless!! Time for a standing O!

I think Toby and Mary went to a different show (acrobats maybe?) that was better than the Goddess Esme Show. Tomorrow we will hear them talk about how good and nice the terrific show was.

Wanders, I am glad to see that you are sticking with the full "Entertainer Esme" in the labels. Esme by itself is not as noticeable, and, besides, that is how she was first introduced to us.

Mary's Helpful Hint #27: If the tremendous show that you had been LOOKING FORWARD to turns out to be LESS than Broadway quality (I know Ken Kensington personally, you know!), then BLAME it all on your travelling companion (Toby, that's you!). Don't admit to recommending it yourself!

I know that Mary and Toby will praise Entertainer Esme and the others for being wonderful, since they hardly ever say anything bad about anyone, but I would LOVE to see them leaving the theatre dissatisfied and dissing Esme's performance, only to run into an ecstatic Derek ...

Well, I see that Derek isn't the only one around here who seems to be pretty taken with Entertainer Esme. I see she already has her own label! Poor Zak...

A close cousin of the standing O is the screaming for an encore. For example, we went to a Billy Joel concert once, and when he finished he left the stage, but the crowd was going wild. So he came back and did two more songs. When he was done, he left, but the crowd was still WOWed, and so he came back and did another song. When he finished that, he left the stage, the house lights came on, and everybody calmly packed up their stuff and left. Nobody was wild or wowed anymore.

The whole encore charade was just meaningless formulaic ritual on everybody's part.

But I don't mind giving a standing O to people on stage who aren't big stars, who you never heard of before, and who you will likely never hear of again. It makes them feel good.

I'm starting to worry that this story will not be about Derek's smoking or Derek's roving eye. But instead about Katie's nagging. We'll know when Mary begins to meddle.
