Mary Worth 2898

It's time to play Be Like Wilbur: Here are the lyrics, and the Karaoke music is linked below. Hit play and sing along without any practice and see how you do. No fair listening to this song on the jukebox to refresh your memory first. Of course, you're in the privacy of your home. Maybe among coworkers at the office. But if you really are brave, videotape your first attempt and share the file with me.

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down a road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant
I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
Well, you would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say

Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend

If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a Cadillac
Whatever you need any time of the day or night

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear even though it's hard to hear
I will stand here close and say

Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)

Let me tell you about a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)

And when we die and float away
Into the night the Milky Way
You'll hear me call as we ascend
I'll say your name then once again

Thank you for being a

Thank you for being a friend (I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
People, let me tell you about a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
Whoa, tell you about a friend (thank you right now, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna tell you right now, and tell you again)
Thank you for being a friend (I wanna thank you, thank you, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend

Careful folks. You just might end up as next year's Worthy Awards opening number!

The Golden Girls Theme. Well, that parks it right in Mary’s demographic—although Betty White is much younger (and wittier) than Mary.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"...And Andrew Gold, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Bea Arthur Are Rolling In Their Graves".

You...feeling:
"Thank you for being a friend.
Traveled down the road and back again.
Your heart is true,
You're a pal and a confidant."

I can only think of a Home Simpson quote:

Homer: "Hey, he's not happy at all! He lied to us through song! I hate when people do that!

Ian: "Oh my God, I don't believe it. He's actually doing it!!!"

Mary, extending palm to Ian: "Pay up, buster."

It looks like Mary "arranging a special showcase" meant that she, Wilbur, and the Camerons stuck around after this dive closed. Everyone else has fled (including the staff).

Wilbur is a mess.

I've been losing weight as I'm having a really hard time keeping anything down lately. Maybe I should read this strip BEFORE breakfast.

Wilbur was in a dark place, but now, he's seen the light!
“The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love.” – Hubert H. Humphrey
Today's quotation is from the official "Mary Worth" website. GROAN!

Well, it's hard to tell from a comic strip, but is Wilbur a good singer?
Also, won't Moy get dinged when the copyright owners notice that she used their song in her strip?

My guess is that the karaoke version would be a shock to KM. I'm sure she was under the impression that the instrumental accompaniment included the melody.

Today's strip is already a Worthy awards nominee, right?

To Wanders' hidden comment, I can recall the only time I ever heard the full length version of that song.

It was a dark and stormy night (for reals!) as my wife and I drove east on I-10 to New Orleans. We were passing through the perpetual tangle of construction that is sometimes referred to as the Golden Triangle. Tuning from station to station, we alit upon the opening cords and, having grown up watching the Golden Girls, we didn't have to debate whether we would listen. We listened. And listened. And listened some more.

It's a nice tune, but man does it go on... I think the lights of Sulfur, Louisiana were just starting to shine through the mist and fog by the time the song wound up.

And I misspelled Sulphur, La. Splendid.

My next next number is "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and I hope you enjoy it!

I tried the karaoke challenge and failed miserably. Sr. Maryellen was right about my singing abilities.

Nance, you took the words right out of my mouth with your boldface Haiku title. Of all the songs Wilbur could sing, he picks this???? Did he just get through watching a Golden Girls marathon on TVLand?

I picture the manager coming out and saying to this motley crew "We would like to close up now. Can you get your no talent friend off the stage."

LouiseF said...

Thanks, Wilbur...Now that infernal song is stuck in my head and not in a good way...

Nance said...

@Regina Wolfe-Parks--I'm sure Maren Koy chose this song because of its Deeply Meaningful lyrics, which prove that Friends Are All The Therapy Anyone Needs. Ever. Certainly Friends can heal depression and alcoholism and loneliness, just like choosing to donate baked goods to a religious charity can heal sexual assault.

I feel like Karaoke (Karenoke?) Night is now the New Pool Party. At least I hope so.

I tried to read the full strip at the official site, but the connection keeps resetting. Looks as if Wilbur went viral. Wilbur broke the Internet.

Maxwell Bacon said...

@mr_dardy: OMG! You're right! What will we do now? I still want to read all the old ones!!! HELP!!! ... Are they punishing us for our snark?

Or, wait ... maybe they have to take the song lyrics down, because of copyright! I bet that's it. Stay tuned ...

SATURDAY

Wilbur's got groupies!

Wilbur: Thank you! Thank you very much! I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

"Wilbur continues his set..." Set implies more than one song, but he's still singing the same song. Did he just sing it over and over?

Actually, that happened once when my friend was hosting karaoke. This guy said he had cancer and wanted to sing "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro, easily one of the stupidest songs ever. But since he had cancer, it was sort of touching. But then he wanted to get up and sing it again, and again. He sang it three or four times, which is three of four times too many to listen to "Honey." Plus it turned out the guy was kind of a jerk. It was a painful night all around.

But still better than watching Wilbur sing karaoke.

KitKat said...

It would be fun if the police entered and hauled Wilbur and his three (count ‘em!) fans away for being drunk and disorderly and creating a public nuisance.

Coming Sunday: Wilbur continues his “set” with 19 more renditions of “ Thank You for Being a Friend.”

lmjb1964, you are so right about “Honey” - ugh. I bet that guy didn’t even have cancer.

Tim said...

@kitkat They are acting drunk, aren't they?

Maxwell Bacon said...

SUNDAY
Go, WILBUR!!! You're AMAZING!!! Your "friends" are TRANSFIXED!!!
I want to be just like you!!!

Yahoonski said...

What did Ian and Toby do to help him when he was down?

Regina Wolfe-Parks said...

Are we going to have two more weeks of Wilbur singing country and western songs praising Mary Toby and Ian?

“Welcome to the Santa Royale Gong Show!!”

I have been posting these all week on my karaoke group's Facebook page, and the main comment I got was "Who still reads 'Mary Worth'"... I was almost as appalled by this comment as I am at the thought that Emily Dickinson is quoted on the Sunday panel... Really, a quotation from "I 'm Nobody. Who are You?" would have been MUCH more appropriate..

Nance said...

@LouiseF--As a long-time devotee of Miss Emily and retired American Lit teacher, I am ill at the thought of her being mentioned in context with all of...That.

I am going to retire to the second floor of my home, put on a white dress, and seek a bit of Seclusion in order to Get Over It.

Indeed.
