Mary Worth 2980

Death metal music is also gnarly. But hopefully, we can learn from it.

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"Duh, Mary, He Just Said Why He Was Grumpy; Listen Much?".

Gnarly! Think losses!
Learn.
Bah! Familiar!
I grumpy old man!
Happened? (Made?)

Also...

That's a big headstone and a fresh plot. How many cats are buried there? Is that a horse on the left?

"Gnarly"? Has Myster Wynter been watching "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"? "Grumpy Old Man?" What's up with the movie reference? Is this KM's way of staying current? If she is, she should stop making references from the 1980s.

Also, that grave on Mary's left looks like one of the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz. (Adding to the Wizard of Oz reference from yesterday. And yes, that tree does look like that apple throwing tree. If so, hit Mary with a rotten apple.)

I looked up "gnarly" to see when it entered the English language (1800) and its usage prevalence (unstoppable since 1980. The last peak usage was 1911.).... I think the recent uptick in using "gnarly" comes not from folks like Mr. Wynter but it's position in the urban dictionary, a dictionary I doubt either Karen Moy or Mary Worth would use. Thought you's want to know... https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?year_start=1800&year_end=2008&corpus=15&smoothing=7&case_insensitive=on&content=gnarly&direct_url=t4%3B%2Cgnarly%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bgnarly%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BGnarly%3B%2Cc0

“What happened? Well, just last week I lost those khaki pants I used to wear all the time. They were covered with Bella’s hair, too.”

I’m quite sure if Bella were watching from above, she’d be much more interested in that cat’s freshly-dug grave than her owner’s grief. I know I certainly am.

I think the graves on the left are for a horse, a bat, and a turtle. I agree, RobC, that's a big grave for one cat. Maybe it's a tiger? BTW - I love your reincarnation saying! Meg - those khaki pants? I think Mary's wearing them.

Here's hoping, Wanders.

What happened? Well, he fell in love with a girl in Elementary School. In High School they started dating. They dated for 4 years, and then decided to get married when they turned 20. They had adventures and loved being with each other, but their greatest sorrow was that they could never conceive a child. After 30 years of otherwise marital bliss, she was struck down by Cancer and died shortly thereafter. Two years ago, a developer came along to kick him out of his house of 45 years. He had an idea, but he just couldn't get enough balloons in time to pull it off. Plus, the physics of it would have just destroyed his house and probably killed him. They bought his house and carted him off to Santa Royal.

It's a sad story.

It’s so sad when someone has to bury their pet gargoyle.

I don't know anyone who has buried their horse in a pet cemetary; cremation and keeping the ashes or burial on your own property are the most sentimental choices. But June got to draw a horse head, so we are OK with this.
Death is gnarly but at least Mary and Mr. Wynter seem to be having a rad time.

Guess it's too late to warn people not to read today's comments while drinking coffee. Bravo, everybody. I'll bet somebody possessing more of the entrepreneurial spirit than myself could make a few bucks selling "Death is a gnarly business" t-shirts to the staffs of local mortuaries. By the way, death not only makes you think about your losses, it is quite often the cause of them.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate if Mr Wynter were to wear a black bowtie? And Mary should obviously be clad in heavy black crêpe and a thick black veil. I'm shocked that Mary doesn't know the appropriate dress for a sad occasion such as this.

Every time I go back and look at the cat's grave the front stone just comes across as some morbid USB drive.

Halloween has come early to the Worthiverse. It’s not even October yet, for Pete’s sake. Is Saul’s flashback going to take up a month? Did he become a grumpy old man because he lived with a slob of a sportswriter named Oscar?

@Regina Wolfe-Parks, the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz scared the bejesus out of me when I was a child - aaaahhhh!!

Why are Mary and OMW both wearing pants with one black leg each? Old Santa Royale mourning custom, perhaps?

MissScarlet said...

KitKat, did you know that Liza Minelli was scared of them too?

r u ok? said...

Can't wait to see Bella's monument - maybe a 30 foot obelisk sporting a giant bow tie.

KitKat said...

@Miss Scarlet, I did not know about Liza being scared by those monkeys too. So, she and I have something in common - how about that? The guards at the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West were mighty frightening too - "Yo eee oh, yo oh oh..."

Regina Wolfe-Parks said...

@kitkat: they scared me too. The first time I saw them, I ran and hid under the bed. My mother had to yank me out, yelling at me that it’s just a movie.

I think JB is in Uncle Joe mode and has given up caring how the strip looks. KM and her writing will do that to you. KM’s writing is a knarly thing.

Um, by the time we learn from death, isn't it too late?

The pet cemetery needs mowing. Maybe Mr. Wynters should get a pet goat and take up residence.

Chester the Dog said...

That is one poorly planned cemetery, they could fit in so many more pet graves in they put them closer together.
