None of us do, Dawn. None of us do.

Ha haaaa! Good ol' Mary Buzzkill, always ready with a bucket of icewater to extinguish any good mood.

"But are you prepared for what you'll do if you find out he's been lying to you all this time and he's actually a permanent resident here and he's married with a couple kids?"

On the other hand, Dawn would probably say, "Oh yeah. Been there, done that. I know the drill."

She doesn't want to think about it because she's already anxious about school starting up again: the fall semester of her 17th year of college.

"WHo would thinka hot Parian like Hugo, (who is so condescending) would be interested in an American girl like me." Face it Dawn, you're just a distraction from the house painting until he goes back to France. Wilbur better get ready for Dawn on the couch and with Ben and Jerry's saying "life is brutal.". Maybe Wilbur will be burned by some statuesque Mozambique beauty and it'll be back to the showers. Now THAT would be a story

@Regina Wolfe-Parks, I like the way you think.

Dawn, perhaps you can go to France as a foreign exchange student and paint your host family’s house. All 23 rooms....

Today's Boldface Haiku is titled

"If Only The Last Line Could Cue Aretha Franklin".

Hot Parisian interested me?
Short. Lucky guy!
Prepared back home France?
Think!

You said it, Scottie. What a bring down and one of the many occasions where supposed helpful neighbor Mary just comes out and says something socially inappropriate.

Dawn doesn’t want to think about it. Of course, Dawn is not known for thinking about anything, so it shouldn’t be much of a chore for her.

That's some black-belt level meddling right there, Mary. You've schooled Dim Dawn, who clearly has no agency unless attached to someone with a Y chromosome, to the fact that this short 'affair' is already doomed and it will be Dim Dawn's fault for getting involved in the first place. Kind of like your relationship with Dr. Jeff (another dim bulb). Life is brutal, for everyone except you.

I've been juggling several different jobs over the last month, and am now trying to get back into the joy and excitement that is Mary Worth. (OK, really it's the joy and excitement and humor of this blog.) I had missed almost a month of Mary. Imagine my dismay when I went to Comics Kingdom and discovered that I could only go back two weeks unless I paid for a premium service. On the old site, I was able to go back years to catch up on stories and characters I had missed. So disappointing. Oh well, much more fun to catch up here through all of you.

@Nance, re: your BFH title, if only!

@lmjb1964

Here's what you missed:

Dawn bumps into Hugo. They eat and have a thoroughly tedious conversation.

Dawn goes out with Hugo. They eat and have a thoroughly tedious conversation.

Dawn visits Mary. They eat and have a thoroughly tedious conversation.

And now you're all caught up!

-- Helpfully yours, S. McW.

Good old Mary, always putting a damper on someone else's happiness.

THURSDAY
Today's strip makes it clear that Dawn cuts her hair with nail scissors and a Weed Whacker.

More great advice from Mary - "Don't think about what's best for you, ask the man."

Yep, Mary completely trashed Dawn's good mood and sent her into a blue funk. Mission accomplished.

"If we enjoy every moment of every day..."

That's a pretty tall order and I say that as someone who started his day cleaning up cat poop outside the litter box and then attending to fountains of snot pouring out of one of my kid's nose shortly after discovering that the AC (today's forecast heat index is 110) has died overnight.

I am enjoying the moment of writing this comment though so there is that I suppose. :)

"I heard somewhere.."
Perhaps the audiobook "Gaslight Your Friends with Impossible Goals"?

Ha haa, Mary is such an evil manipulator. Dawn comes in all happy in the present and Mary brings her down by cautioning her to think of the future. So now Dawn's all bummed out about the future and Mary tells her to be happy in the present. She just loves to jerk around the emotions of weak-minded people.

KitKat said...

“I heard somewhere...” is Mary’s alternate to “They say....” Yes, it’s banal sayings time!

To be fair to Mary, Dawn admitting she’s afraid to ask Hugo what he wants does not bode well for their relationship. Then again, unhealthy relationships are par for the Worthiverse course. Let’s see, there’s Mary and Jeff, Ian and Toby, Wilbur and Iris, Wilbur and Fabiana, Estelle and Arthur/Er, Tommy and Tina Baby, etc. Zak and Iris might be an exception, except who knows what happened to them since they’re in Worthiverse Limbo?

Wow, Mary's heavy on the platitudes today. I try to enjoy every moment of every day, but then work and the foolishness I have to deal with gets in the way. Does KM even know any real people or does she just sit in her home reading her book of quotes and Barbara Cartland novels?

SATURDAY

"I want to live in the moment, Mary . . . and not worry about tomorrow!"

"Maybe that's the only way to live, Dawn."

Yeah, maybe that's the only way to live. Sheesh, what a cement-head.

No matter how trite or idiotic Dawn's drivel is, Mary can always top her. She's a true virtuosa of vapidity.

I think Dawn has the "Living in the moment" thing down pretty well. No steady job, has been taking classes at the college for years, apparently on a random variety of subjects, and seems to have plenty of time to eat at restaurants, got to museums, and even flit off to beautiful Italy. Must be nice to not have to worry about an income, her future, etc., etc.

“Life is unpredictable”?? Mary, you should know by now that it’s predictably brutal.

We're at that point in the (ahem) story where the plot is taking a back seat to the visual features, and I have to point out that I am glad to be able to magnify those magnets on Mary's fridge. She needs to remind herself to "write Wendy" and "make muffins". Given the variety of brain training devices available today, these seem pretty primitive. I'd like to see Mary's Cheese-food-slice-posing-as-a-cellphone buzzing to remind her to do either of these things. Get in the 21st century already, JB!

Does Mary really need a reminder to make muffins? Isn't that like most of us needing a reminder to breathe?

I'm glad to see Hugo has finally stopped letting Dawn distract him from his work. I wonder if, when he's in class, he gives all of his answers in both French and English? His professors probably can't stand him.
