Mary Worth 1,379

The characters of Mary Worth continue to struggle with the believability of this story. The characters are more like real people than I realized.

Today's Full Strip

It seems Ian has two loaves of bread instead of arms. At least our lady beauties are each holding one loaf from falling.

Where is the butter?

Oh my goodness! The return of Professor Tubby McPompous! Today striking a casual pose. (Toby should really tell him the boxy cut is not the most flattering.) It's been a few YEARS since we've seen him, right? Anybody?

Being back at Charterstone seems a letdown, somehow, after all of our recent exotic locales.

@Punky: I believe the last time we saw Ian was February 5th, the first Sunday summary strip after Nola Wolvenson was introduced to us at the Charterstone pool party. But he was only standing in the background, talking to Toby.

I wonder how that umbrella works in the first panel...

Again, the word "incident". As in "incidentally, an incompetently run cruise ship sank, killing many people, but OUR friends are all right."

Or are they? Judging by Ian's and Toby's concerned expressions, there is some doubt about the Westons and their well-being. PTSD? Flesh-eating bacteria? Insert ominous music sting here--played by an electronic organ like in the old-timey soap operas.

The Plain Dealer (Cleveland newspaper) today published a letter to the editor from a reader in Avon, Ohio, who complained about the tastelessness of MW's Costa Concordia copycat plot. (I wonder if she posts on MW & Me.)

Toby went from perky to haggard in the blink of an eye. Even her neckline changed.

Dear Ask Wendy,

One of my favorite comic strip blogs recently made an error in their numbering scheme, going from "Mary Worth 1,376" on Sunday to "Mary Worth 1,337" on Monday. What's worse is that the incorrect numbers have continued throughout the week, so that today's post is "Mary Worth 1,339." What is the best way to notify the author that this has happened?

I see where Toby and Tubby got prominent Star Feature Panel Time today. It looks like he's put on several pounds since his Background Time in the Nola Plot. So much so that both Mary and Toby have to hold up his arms. So sad.

Another toss-away strip, as far as plot goes. I'm not fooled by the Ersatz Ominous Leading Question posed by Mrs. Claus. All that means is that Mary gets to pontificate for a few days and blather a dozen or so generic platitudes a la Not Taking Things For Granted; Each Day Is A Gift; Treasuring Our Friends, and yada yada yada.

(Saw the ed letter in the PD. Almost lost a sip of Maxwell House!)

Yes, believe it or not, the Plain Dealer thought that it was an important enough topic to publish a letter of indignation about Moy's insensitivity to the Costa Concordia "incident". I'd bet that the author of that letter reads this blog. C'mon, who's gonna own up to it?

For those curious on the Op-ed mentioned, it can be found here:

The comment underneath was kind of funny as well.

Am I the only one who thought "mmmmmm...mutton" when Prof Chinbeard appeared?

And when did the Mary's character become Asian? Is that Ms. Moy's influence?

Duh Toby! No, Dawn is NOT "alright". She has never been alright and she never WILL be "alright". This is Dawn, remember.

I went back in the archives to find the posts where we Ohioans introduced ourselves to each other. No one mentioned being from Avon, though. Lots of Parmas and Euclids and Akrons, but no Avon. I just hope that the PD doesn't decide to cancel Mary Worth, and substitute Apartment 3G instead.

fauxprof@1:51 PM, perhaps the Ohioans should write to the PD in support of Mary Worth. Truly, it is the first thing in the paper I turn to each morning.

Hi! I couldn't find Mary Worth on the Washington Post comics site today. Only Doonesbury. Is this just a temporary glitch with web-design, or is it the new normal? Anyone else notice? Thanks, Anon.
