Mary Worth 4011

Oh, dear. It turns out that Jared is the one turning into Wilbur (either that, or he's moonlighting as a caterer). A variety of soft drinks? How many sodas can the two of you drink?

Four recycled panels spanning five years - this may be a record for June, and Wanders deserves a prize for finding all of them. I particularly enjoy the invisible passengers. Jared’s car is a beater, but at least he had it painted (or more likely painted it himself) a few times.

A variety of soft drinks - does this mean both Coke AND Pepsi? Estelle has never thanked Wilbur for “arranging everything” when he picked up ribs at Woody’s. Jess has low standards. It’s not like this picnic is being catered by Chef Pierre, with a pink cake by John Dill.

Full of great ideas and great facts? Jared must be the person to avoid at gatherings. It also might explain why he’s not permitted in the staff cafeteria at Northview Hospital.

Among the variety of soft drinks, does he have caffeine free diet Dr.Pepper? I haven’t been able to find it since lockdown.

Jared certainly is full of great facts. For instance, assorted sides were only called as such after Civil War general Ambrose P Burnside got some of Mary’s muffin crumbs stuck in his sideburns during the Siege of Vicksburg.

Painting the car without removing the duct tape holding it together is just like moving the headstones and leaving the bodies, except Jared’s car smells worse.

Tess:

Tony’s Deli? I prefer Jerry’s Sandwich Shoppe….

Chicken cutlet? I prefer salami, with extra mustard- just like my Uncle Wilbur…

Assorted sides? I guess you mean potato salad and cole slaw…No three bean salad?

A variety of soft drinks? Cheerwine? Moxie? Grapette? New Coke? I prefer plain bottled water…

Prune pineapple muffins for dessert? No thanks, I prefer homemade brownies…

Oh, never mind. This spot looks lovely! Let me spread my original cast Star Trek picnic blanket out…

Thank you so much, Dr. Cameron, for setting me straight on the origin of "assorted sides"! I knew the term had originated at the time of the Civil War. But I was always under the impression that it was because one morning, when the Union and Confederate soldiers were preparing for battle, someone remembered that it was "Take an Enemy to Battle Day". As such, soldiers from both sides started mingling - blue, grey, blue, grey - what a bloody mess! Anyway, in the aftermath, that skirmish became known as the Battle of Assorted Sides.

Jess seems like an RC Cola gal.

Jared is trying to win a contest on how quickly he can scare off a date. He just might do it too. Next up: Did you know that the word 'picnic' came from the French word 'piquenique'?

A great fact for Jared: A car held together with duct tape is not road worthy.

Poor Jess might end up in the hospital again when the duct tape gives out and that front hood pops up and blinds Jared.
