Mary Worth 1,148

Loved? Loved? That's past tense, right? Is it possible that the love Bobby felt at 14 was fleeting and he actually moved on with his life? Or is it more likely that after seeing Gina's face in panel 1, he felt a little queasy and decided that love isn't for him.

Can someone explain whose fingers those are on the bracelet hand in panel one?

And could big, brawny Bobby really be wearing the bracelet that he gave to Hina when they were kids? Really? Are his wrist measurements really the same as a 8-14 year old girl?

Yes, love fades, Hina. Just as bright pink background couches fade to tan.

So when I read yesterday's strip, it looked like Bob(by) was saying "you're here now and I'm not letting you go," but today he maybe is possibly not as emotionally stunted as Gina and actually moved on with his life? So did Gina utter the Rick Astley paraphrase yesterday and our Dear Artist isn't so good at speech bubble directions?

Wishful thinking, kids. My wager is that we have DAYS of this back and forth, lovelovelove stuff to go, all just a prelude to nothingness.

As much as I'd love to see the cruel hand of fate snatch that bracelet off Gina's wrist, I agree with heydave@8:32 a.m. This IS the Worthiverse, after all. However, part of me thinks back to Gina's changing eye color some days back. Could Moy have used that as a prelude to Gina bursting into a rendition of "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" when Bobby waves bye-bye to her? Dare we hope?

Three possible plot directions:
--As Wanders noted, Bobby did say "loved" (past tense), and just tells her to move on already, he has plenty of groupies to keep him occupied now.
--They hug again (I love you , I love you, I love you, etc.), get on a plane together and leave us taking our plot misery with them.
--Bobby invites her to move back with him, but Gina realizes she can't leave her job at DINER. I mean, where can you find a job like that?!

I'm having a tough time with this one - she actually values that snakeskin bracelet more than finally finding Bobby? And he has to state that she can have it back? Bobby, watch out, you're going to need a job that pays a heck of a lot more than playing on a soccer team to keep this one happy.

Despite all of us hoping for something racier or more exciting, I think Bobby is going to explain to Gina that he still loves her ''like a sister'' and then introduce her to his fiance, who will probably have a cute brother that hits it off immediately with Gina, so everybody's happy... Zzzz

I loved you, I also loved Brooklyn, skateboarding and gruesome mob hits. Anything else? I have a plane to catch.

My secret word is "hipnging" which is something Gina and Bobby will never do together.

@heydave -- "Prelude to Nothingness" would be a great title for a book of collected "Mary Worth" strips, if anyone were ever insane enough to compile one.

Eh, you're all wrong. This being the Worthiverse, these two emotionally-stunted idjits will marry and we'll be off to the races one more time with another set of emotionally-stunted idjits in another stupid story.

And Moy will never explain the connection - if any - between "Jill Black" and "Bobby Black". (Really the only reason I've read so long).

I think I see the cruel hand of fate mixed in with their hands in the first panel. These star-crossed losers stil have more trials to face.

Maude Findlay said...

If they MUST get married, I demand Jill Black as Bobby's cousin! If only so we can see her in some awesome purple bridesmaid gown, smirking wile thinking; ''HA! This wedding is so lame. That ponytail went out with saddle shoes and poodle skirts! If this was MY wedding, it would have some class! Now, where's that rolling bar at?''

My word verification was ''mawsdumb''- which sounds like the punchline to- ''What does a slack-jawed yokel say, when asked about his mother's intelligence?''

Love isn't for everyone, you know.

Amanda Kate said...

Don't be silly, Wanders. It was her ponytail that convinced Bobby that love wasn't for him.

Does it not look to anyone else like Bobby is placing Gina under arrest? Perhaps for soliciting? Because... that would be great.

I loved you...until I saw that enormous cold sore on your lower lip. (And this debate about tenses is just silly. Do you honestly believe that Moy pays attention to conventions like that?)
[My word was doboat. Guess we're wrapping this one up and heading to the Bum Boat.]

Why does it look like Our Gina has a pierced lip in panel two?

WV: "ragyn," which is what Gina's hormones are doing right this minute, as is my heart wondering if this storyline will find a conclusion by the time of the next presidential election.

I still say that Bobby is going to invite Gina to be his number three.

"I loved you when I was 14 and it is so nice to see you. But I am sure you have moved on with your life as have I. Let me show you a picture of my fiance'."

Remember that Jill Black had a past that included a broken heart? Could Bobby have been the one who jilted her at the alter, and then she took his name anyway, in sort of a Miss Haversham type revenge? I think any one of us should be writing this strip!

My word is syment, which sounds ominously like cement, as in overshoes...

Gina! Run for your life! Bobby is turning into a werewolf in the second panel! Or, in an alternate, undangerous -yet still unusual- possibility, Bobby is converting to Hasidic Judaism, beginning to grow his payot, even as we speak.

Thanks, Meg. I had to look that one -payot- up.
I learn so much about other cultures and parallel universes from reading this bog.

i need this story over because the word hina really bugs me in the comment page .some people will laugh at anything

@Anon 5:58 - I seriously did not mean to cause any offense, and I'm sure no one else did either. And I'm sorry if you have been offended. It's just another way to needle the writer of this strip for silly plotting - in this case, it's for the seemingly gratutious last names (first Italian, and then out of the blue she's Hispanic) that Karen Moy has given to Gina's character. But I'd be happy to cut it out. After all, we're talking about a wide target here, so there is plenty of other fodder.

So, I may be unpopular for this, I think he says "loved" here because he's speaking of his emotions at a time in the past, and I kind of hope he still loves her.

But I'm the same person who was pissed because I watched "The Bicycle Thief" and thought the ending was too depressing.

So, you know - I want these kids to run happily off to Brooklyn.

It might also be nice to see Mary again. Remember Mary? It's a strip about Mary.

Okay, this is the most insipid story I've seen yet. What happened to the bang-bang-shoot-em-up in the Warehouse. Now that was an exciting story!

Have you seen "Garfield without Garfield"? I think we need a "Mary Worth without Moy." The brilliant contributors to this blog could replace Moy's text with their own and create a really great, exciting, funny, and, above all, interesting comic using just Joe Giella's artwork.
