Mary Worth 1881

Holy Easy Peasey! It actually was the hospital heroin cabinet! It's a shame no one has developed a way to limit access and securely check who opens the cabinet. It might require some sort of technology, though, so it may not be worth it.

Also, it's always fun to talk about employees after they've been fired, isn't it H.R. Department? H.R. Department? Are you there?

I love every single thing about this panel, from its goofy word emphasis to its completely ridiculous plot explication.

Olive's floating head!
Drew and Olive's blue highlights!
The random quotation marks!
Mary's bunny teeth!
The idea that hospitals stock heroin!

What a satisfying day.

Mountview Hospital may be a hotbed of heroin use and rampant gossip, but the Facilities guys do a remarkable job with the floors. They're so shiny, women who wear skirts or dresses are courting disaster and/or harassment.

The stethoscopes draped around the shoulders of every medical person at Mountview are not real stethoscopes. They're made of plastic and are used for identification purposes only, i.e., "I'm a doctor, and you're not."

Enough already... the point has been made. At least 30 times. Kapuht is a dirtbag and Olive is an unusually perceptive child. Move on.

When my nephew was really young, he had to have a couple of surgeries. He hated all the doctors (and to this day gets nervous around people wearing white coats). He didn't even want to go into the hospital.

Little did I know back then that it meant all the doctors and nurses were doing heroin! That so-called world class hospital was just a drug den and I didn't even know it. I guess I just wasn't as perceptive as my nephew was. Poor kid.

P.S. The surgeries were successful and saved his life. Lingering anxieties about people in white coats is a small price to pay.

Gotta love the unsubtle and inaccurate depiction of the workplace that comics have to employ in order to convey plot information. . . Of course staff would be canned for discussing others the way these folks do, but how else would we know about Kapuht unless he had his operating table in the foyer with a needle in his arm?

For the rest of this week Mary will be calling Olive and her parents to spread the gossip/info.

Olive will send Mary a photo of the flower fairies with a "See, I told you so" caption on the back.

Mary will be saying "!" and emitting lots and lots of gamma rays.

Of all the controlled substances a doctor might get his hands on (Vicodin, OxyContin, etc.), Kapuht goes for heroin? But then, Mountview's dispensary system still operates on 19th century protocols.

I think KM sometimes just picks up snippets of text or phrases and the only way to get them out of her head is to create a story around them. She is an artist after all and that is, I suppose, how artists deal with things. So it could well be that the whole Olive story was her way of processing the phrase "he lost a patient on the operating table."

Also, gotta love Drew's black doctor's coat. It probably denotes rank.

I beleive this is the first time "artist" and "Karen Moy" have been used in the same sentence.

I'm willing to blame the colorists for the Dr. Drew's black lab coat, but it does blow my mind. The medical profession makes a big deal, particularly for younger doctors, of wearing the white coat (there's even such a thing as a White Coat Ceremony at many med schools.)
