I think Cal is channeling his inner Kurt Cobain with that flannel shirt and tousled hair. How much you want to bet he also plays bass in a grunge band?
With all this talk about negative space, I was hoping Cal's notebook would be full of beautifully minimalist pure white pages inspired by the late Robert Ryman.
I finally got around to researching “negative space.” It’s an actual technique in art and design. Going by the what I read and examples I saw, Cal’s self portrait doesn’t seem to employ any negative space, despite Toby’s repeated use of the term. I suspect she boned up on a bunch of terms and is regurgitating them to impress her clueless students.
Tomorrow (or maybe Friday, yawn): Cal’s notebook will fall onto the floor and reveal his sketches of Ms. Cameron. Ooh!
