It may work differently in Santa Royale, but usually college credits are not free. Therefore Dawn (or, more to the point, Wilbur) will be paying for the privilege of volunteering.

Background observations:

1. Even the KITCHEN curtains at Charterstone are pink.

2. The big grey granite books have proliferated out there, too. They can't be cookbooks. I have a lot of cookbooks, and they tend to be very colorful. Y'know, maybe these things are not books at all, but some sort of fungal infestation throughout the complex.

Hey Dawn, you forgot your Barbie lunchbox!

College credits for volunteering, huh? That's how Mary earned her Ph.D in Meddling Science.

Even my anti-robot word verification has an editorial comment about today's strip: Boo dumb.

So... the only reason she's volunteering is because she's getting course credit for it. Wow. What a humanitarian...

I think the college just gave her a special deal because they want to get her out. She's been there for 10 years or so. If she stays any longer, they'll have to give her tenure or something.

Dear Mountview, Please assign Dawn to the Bubonic Plague and Flesh Eating Bacteria wards. This is the only way Dawn will receive her college credits.

Where DOES Dawn get that endless supply of purple clothing? I hope we find out, so I can avoid shopping there.

Elaine@9:20 AM, my guess is Marcy's, the apparel shop of choice of both Mary Worth and Bonnie -- Bonnie Johnson.

Wow. Dawn sure did learn something from her Experience With The Incident:

"When possible, score The Twofer."

Dawn's character is unfailingly opportunistic and shallow. I hope the hospital doesn't put her on a ward where wealthy patients are sedated. She will ransack their belongings and write herself into their wills.

The only positive to potentially come of Dawn volunteering at Mountview (Exciting! "Hospital" has a name!) is that we might get opportunity to gander at the hi-fi again.

Why do I have a sudden urge to search e-bay for a 'Wilbur' bookened for my bookshelf?

I have a lot of purple clothing, too, because I like the color and it looks good on me. But I also have other colors in my wardrobe. What is with the purple? I'm guessing one time Dave told her she looked good in something purple.

So the big life change after the near death experience are: Dawn is going to volunteer a few hours at the hospital (and get college credits for it), and Wilbur is going to eat sandwiches again. Really? That's it?

Wilbur, of course Dawn can handle schoolwork and the hospital. She hasn't done schoolwork in years.

I wonder if Dawn realizes that life is brutal for people who work and attend college, care for family members and go to college, or will have huge loans to pay off.
Why not credit for all the above people?

I can hear my dear, departed English teacher asking us, "now class, THINK about this phrase...is this the Hospital for Volunteers?"

Dawn's tray is empty. She doesn't even have the smarts to figure out Wilbur's not here to serve her lunch! Good luck with that whole college thing, Dawn.
