So, America West Airlines paid the product placement fee, but People Magazine played hardball and couldn't reach acceptable terms? Your loss People Magazine. Your loss. Even an airline that hasn't flown since 2005 knows a good promotional deal when it sees one.

I'll remember what you said, too:

  • "I wonder if you'd like to join me for local outings?"
  • "Self-regulation and rules are necessary to prevent chaos."
  • "There are some things you can only do when you're relatively young."
  • "John is an expert at what he does."
  • "Today your real live shopping is on me."
  • "It'll soon be New Year's Day, a day to make resolutions."
  • "Some dishes can be made in advance of others."
  • "Do you see how the end of this avocado gives in? That means it's ripe."
  • "An asteroid impact led to climate change."

How could I ever forget?

So I, like you, have been staring at those eggs all morning, and I'm thinking it's true, I've never seen eggs prepared that way before, and I'm wondering if there's a recipe, and how much self-clumping kitty litter it requires.

I don't know which is more surprising, that Olive actually has friends, or that she actually attends school. By my recollection, she hasn't been in class since last November.

At least when Olive visits Santa Royale, stuff happens like flower fairies and heroine addicted doctors and visitations from angels and midnight drownings. You know, stuff!

By the way, I'm glad to see Mary Worth Remix back at it.

Yes, you both see the world as a plaything to be manipulated in your never ending quest for world domination.

We rented the newest James Bond movie, Spectre, last night, and when it was done, my wife and I looked at each other and said, "That's two hours and 40 minutes of our lives we can't reclaim." I only bring it up because throughout the movie I kept thinking this plot is about as compelling as Olive and Mary in New York.

Today's new Jukebox Song is "In Old New York," sung by the Songbird of the South, Kate Smith - one of the great WWII era vocalists. I'm sure Olive is a huge fan. As Mary and Olive continue to celebrate all there is to see and explore in Manhattan, I begin to lose all hope.

I literally thought Olive was going to say "As long as I don't have to go to school."

I, for one, hate to see this tale come to a close. It's been a great break from all the plot-rich, character driven stories we normally have to endure.

"Mary, can I ask you an important question? Is this how real grown ups talk? Mommy and Daddy only say things like 'easy-peasy' and 'tee-hee Eddie.' But when I'm with you, I feel like such a big girl because we say things that don't make any sense."

"Don't worry, Olive. If any of this was confusing, tomorrow is Sunday and we can rehash the entire conversation."

The philosophical depth of this discussion is too intellectual for me to follow, but I get the suspicion that Mary is subtly grooming Olive for world domination.

Last January, I took my son to Manhattan on a Father-Son senior trip, and we had a blast. We went to see a Broadway show, and went ice skating (for free at Bryant Park). We saw Stomp downtown. We had lots of adventures, but they don't really make a good story!

The one thing we did, that I really hope Mary and Olive will do is we went to a jazz club. We went to a little hole in the wall place called Somethin' Jazz Club. It was located off the beaten path on East 52nd Street, and as we climbed the dimly lit, narrow stairs to the third floor, my son turned to me with a glint in his eye and said, "This looks authentic." The Matt Savage Trio was playing and they were amazing. There were 12 people in the club, six of whom were students of the drummer. Matt Savage played the piano and really looked like he was 18 tops. We ordered appetizers, which they ran downstairs to a restaurant to bring up to us. It was a great night. Sadly, but not surprisingly, the Somethin' Jazz Club has closed, so Mary and Olive will miss it (children were welcome), but you can enjoy the Matt Savage Trio on Spotify.
