Assuming Shelly Cohen was a young widow of 45 when she came to the Haven, and Dr. Smith was still 16, that would place their ages at about 30 years apart. Based, on his appearance, I'm guessing that Dr. Smith is now about 55 to 60. That would make Shelly Cohen nearly 90 years old. She really is Dear Old Shelly Cohen.

Every desperate youth who comes to Promise Haven is wearing royal blue pants. That underscores the degree of their desperation.
At least the subway car was clean - and empty. Actually, it looks very much like Diner.
Funny how Dr. Smith resembles President Obama, the only "black" person Joe and Karen have ever seen.
Watch out for that young tough in the backwards baseball cap. Sure sign of trouble, that. What a thug.
It would be easier for him to say “ My father kicked me out when I was 16.” And many less commas.
Where? Where is this going??
And why?
And will we get to know that young and shiftless fellow with his baseball hat on backwards, signifying True Evil?
Dr. Smith looked like he was 32 when he was supposed to be 16 in that subway panel. Mary, on the other hand, at 125 years of age, still looks like a fresh-faced 60 year old.
Well, at least his story is more interesting than anything else we've seen in recent months (years?).
When do we see the gala where Mary is lavished with accolades? It will be grand. And hopefully the audience will be filled with happy hobos from Pleasant Haven.
Today, The the role of Shelly Cohen is being played by June Lockhart.
@PromiseHavenDropOut--I completely agree. He is very old-looking for a young teen. Then again, Greg Oden, now of the Miami Heat, has looked 40 since high school.
@Thorp--YES! She really does look like June. I always liked her. Not in that goofy show "Lassie", but when she was the mom in "Lost in Space." Now that was a great show! No one can mom around like June Lockhart. She Looks Concerned so well.
C'mon, do you really expect Moy to read, write and do basic math?
I said yesterday, I think that was Milton's dad riding the subway.
Wow - Shelly does look like June Lockhart. And Mary looks like one of our founding fathers today - especially with that cravat she has been sporting for days. Oh, wait....this has all happened in one day?
Thorpnotized-- i was thinking more along the lines of Katharine Hepburn.
THURSDAY - In the second panel, Milton's quote should have started with "Later that day, ...", since his and Shelly's clothes are the same as they were in the first panel (although she unbuttoned her blouse at the neck and rolled her sleeves down). So Milton got a place to live, a job, and decided to go back to school, all in one day. Shelly is a miracle worker!
@Thorpnotized at 9:32 AM, their clothes are the same. However, Milton seems to have aged a good 20 years between panels while Shelly looks the same. Something's amiss with the space-time continuum.
So, greeter/counselors at Promise Haven get wooden desks and name plates. This looks like the office of the school principal circa 1969.
FRIDAY: Another guest appearance by Les Moore of Funky WB in panel 2.
The pink drapes can only mean that Milton attended Santa Royale University. I wonder if Professor Ian Cameron was on the faculty at that time, which appears to be circa 1970. SRU had a strict dress code then - male students were required to wear royal blue trousers, and co-eds (quaint!) had to wear skirts.
FRIDAY
And just like that, my life turned around, all because of a hug.
Voila!
Just like Real Life.
"And now I'm a doctor--all because of you Mary Worth, whom I've never seen, never heard of and never had help me with my tuition or anything else in my struggles to become a success. Yes YOU Mary are the real hero in this story. If not for you, none of this would've ever happened." --what Mary is hearing inside her head while Dr. Smith is sharing the details of his life.
KitKat, I thought when I saw that paned window with the drapes that DO Shelly Cohen had started a college in her living room. That also might explain why there are only about twelve people in the class.
So bummed Milton wasn't a druggie. If Shelly had helped him kick a meth addiction I would have been impressed. Assisting a teen runaway who then reconciles with his family, eh, whatever. When can we get to the award ceremony - I just know it's going to be awesome.
Gaaaah! This morning (Sunday), the Akron Beacon Journal announced it was canceling Mary Worth. They're keeping Family Circus, where those insipid kids need to be strangled, only they have no necks. They're keeping Marmaduke, where the punch line for fifty years or more is "Gee, what a big dog". There is no justice.
At least we still have the online option--and I guess I should be grateful they're not replacing Mary with Apartment 3-G.
@fauxprof at 9:07 AM, what terrible news from the Beacon Journal! Thank goodness you are a citizen of the online community of Santa Royale.
The dunderheads at the Beacon Journal must not be following the Shelly Cohen plot, which neatly ties up the problem of homeless, at-risk youth with rainbows, hugs and doves ( seagulls?). The A-B editorial board is missing out big time.
Re: the last panel of Sunday's strip: Is that at-risk black youth washing a poster of happy white people under a rainbow? Perhaps this is how he is supposed to learn to hope?
@fauxprof--Sad! What a tragic lack of priorities the ABJ has shown.
In other news: SUNDAY
Panel Four's dialogue is quite ironic seeing as Dr. Smith's transformation looks like it was gender-based as well.
Well, if Dr.Smith is a "doctor of the highest regard", perhaps he can take Mary on as a patient. She is obviously suffering from the highest self-regard known to humankind.
Hello, I haven't written here for quite sometime. I am writing now to let Wanders know that the Akron Beacon Journal, my home town paper, has announced that they are making room for new comics and for this to happen, they decided to drop "For Better or Worse" and "Mary Worth". I knew it would happen sometime.
MONDAY. How nice. Mary is going to take Shelly shopping for something nice to wear to the awards dinner. Just Mary's kindly way of saying that Shelly looks like a bag lady, and, judging by her apartment, is too poor and tasteless to choose something stylish. Of course, it's going to be Mary Worth's idea of Santa Royale Style.
