I, for one, am very much looking forwards to Nance's haiku today. If I were a bit less shameless, I would steal the gag as today's strip really is quite fertile source material.
Mary and Wilbur’s hands each lingered a beat too long on the plate. The muffin sat, silent and majestic, between them. Another muffin. Wasn’t it always a muffin keeping them apart? Sometimes it was a muffin named “Dawn” or a muffin named “Iris” — sometimes it was blueberries.
Fauxprof, you are a funny one. Wanders, I don't want to make more work for you, and I hesitate to bring this up so soon after the Worthy Awards, but here is my situation: I don't think the muffin handoff would make it as panel of the year, but I think it is worthy of some attention at awards time. I wonder if a new category may be needed.

"It's hard to be happy" isn't quite at "Life is brutal" level, but keep working at it, WIlbur. You'll get there.
Cheer up, Wilbur, there must be lots of women out there who would be interested in a sniveling self-pitying whiner. Therapists leap to mind.

Muffin close-up. The muffin hears all, knows all, is all.

Mmmmm...crushed charcoal briquet muffins. A bold choice, but Mary is auditioning for The Great British Baking Show.
Did Wilbur even tell Mary that he dumped Iris first for a scammer he met in Colombia? He's so pathetic.
Is that a muffin or a moon rock?

Wilbur broke up with Iris because he found someone who made him happier - even if it was disingenuous.
Wilbur took his happiness level higher.
Going back to Iris is a desperate mistake.
Wilbur would be better off buying a dog.
I'm thinking the 'muffin' is made of stuff Mary got from cleaning out her vacuum cleaner bag.
Wanders, can we add "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan to the jukebox? Or is it already there?
