I was inspired to try the monkfish when I realized I would be celibate for the rest of my life.

I looked at the steam coming off the chowder and I thought "What is he eating, witch's brew?"

Today is another banal, boring conversation with Mary and Jeff, with Mary, as usual thinking she is a "good influence" because Jeff decided to try something on the menu other than the fish sticks and french fries. I hate Mary's smugness.

Like you Wanders, I was surprised about the monkfish order because this fish is mainly in the North Atlantic. I'd hate to see the bill, as they probably had to import it. Either that, it's sme other fish and they're saying it's monkfish. Yay! Jeff is becoming a REAL adventurous eater.

As to the total opposite of genius, I estimate that we have another three days of Jeff and Mary (there’s still the ride home) and then a Sunday summary recapping the past week. If we’re all suffering from ennui, imagine poor June, having to illustrate this stuff.

Monkfish! I haven’t heard monkfish referenced in decades. It was called “the poor man’s lobster” based on its similar texture (not taste). And I love this, courtesy of the Department of Natural Resources of the State of Maryland: “Monkfish are sometimes known as ‘allmouth’ since the fish is mostly head and the head is mostly mouth.” That describes Mary to a T.

I've eaten many adventurous things in my brief 52 years, but having chowdah isn't one of them. That's like saying "I was inspired to try the DOUBLE cheeseburger." On my 40th we dropped half a mortgage at a place in Portland (Me): Bandol; ate deep fried calves brains, duck ovaries and all sorts of rich imperial tid-bits.

Jeff, why don't you try a new barber? Get a Mike Brady perm.

Monkfish Chowdah...

Whisk in soymilk. Stir in potatoes, thyme, salt and pepper, and bring just to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, partially cover, and simmer until fragrant and thickened, and potatoes are almost tender, about 15 minutes. Stir in monkfish and corn and cook until fish is just cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes more.

@Tim, first off, classy name. Second off, having had the good fortune to travel to Vietnam and spend a while in Saigon, I can attest that if you put your mind to it, you could get by eating nothing but fried springrolls. That said, while I was dining at a restaurant in Cholon (Chinatown), we feasted upon several entire roast suckling pigs. By which I mean we ate just about every part of the pigs over a succession of courses, including the brains, which were served in half of the piggie's skull. It was all delicious!

I have something new and adventurous you can try Jeff. How about getting away from this smug old biddy that you've been dating for the last 30 years and haven't gotten so much as a passionate kiss from her. If Dawn has left Harlan, maybe you can try dating her. Now that WOULD be an adventure! Picture Wilbur as your father-in-law! You could say to him at the altar "Can I call you dad?" (A line from the movie Easy Money.) Even better maybe you, Dawn, Estelle and WIlbur could have a double wedding. that would be something for Toby and Mary to gossip about!

Heck yeah, you can get monkfish in CA. You can even find them live at the Chinese fish markets. But monkfish chowder must be an east coast thing. I've never seen it prepared that way here.
